The firm of W. Menz & Co, have their origins in Wakefield St, Adelaide, in 1850, when John Menz commenced a humble grocer's shop which became a family concern. Mr. W. Menz took over the founders business, and was joined by A.H. Menz who both used their skill and youthful enthusiasm to expand business.
A biscuit factory was added to the little shop in 1884, and in 1893 a confectionery department was also added. Since it's founding, several succeeding generations of the Menz family worked hard to build up the business.
Their factory was located on the Wakefield Street and Divett Place corner. W. Menz & Co, became a Limited Company in 1921. The well known Yo-Yo biscuit was introduced to South Australia by W. Menz & Co., Ltd in 1932, to coincide with a local toy Yo-Yo craze. The company went public in 1951, and around 1953 biscuit production was transferred to new premises at Galway Ave, Marleston. In 1965 the firm amalgamated and became Arnott-Motteram-Menz Pty Ltd.
The tin is extremely hard-to-get and would have a value exceeding $200. |
