Francis Hardey Faulding opened a chemist shop in Rundle St, Adelaide, in 1842. Pioneer chemists in the infant colony flourished and Faulding saw an opportunity in the eatablishment of a wholesale trade. He acquired a valuable site in Clarence Pl, Adelaide, and set up a warehouse to sell imported drugs. After faulding's death in 1868, Luther Scammell, who had been in partnership with Faulding for 7 years, took control of the business.

Luther, had originally trained as a surgeon in England, but had turned to the profession of pharmacy on his arrival in South Australia in 1849. Luther led the firm to many successes in the manufacturing field and the company grew and progressed.

After out-growing the companies city premises Faulding relocated the laboratory to Southwark in 1923.
