Colt Wendt's First AFF Jump
On Saturday November the 19th '05 our friend, Colt Wendt, made his first solo Skydive. Following an AFF progression Colt jumped with one AFF instructor, Bryan Wolford, after having successfully completed 3 AFF student tandem jumps. Each with specific tasks for the AFF student.
Oldskydiver saw Colt dirt dive the jump. It was obvious that he knew the drill. He knew the launch, his body geometry & his tasks in freefall.
The Load : Colt & Bryan flying student & instructor, Gary Fletcher, flying videographer & Terry Wendt flying observer & proud parent. The Launch : Fletch was all of the way out, Bryan & Colt were on the step with Colt inboard, Terry was "in the door"
The Jump : (now this is on video, there is NO jazzing it up here!) Bryan rocked it off & he & Colt were flying the relative wind "on the hill" That's right, Colt was flat & stable off the step!
Jump run was on a 270 heading, right into the setting sun. Colt held that heading & did not very from it one iota! Of course that made Fletch's video look Hollywood & Fletch was right there from the "get go" Colt was as stable as a rock & did his "circle of awareness drill" perfectly. That is : ALTIMITER, HORIZON, JM, repeat, etc. He was so stable that it looked less like a student jump and more like an RW jump! He fell & did the drill so well that Bryan let go with one hand! That in itself says alot! Colt was still rock solid so Bryan shrugged to the camera & let go with the other hand to let Colt fly it his self! ( all the while Bryan was there if needed, never came to be!) At 6K Colt stopped the drill & at 5.5 gave a big wave off & dumped! It was awesome & a picture perfect AFF jump! It's on video & we hope one and all get to view it! When Colt came in, on radio, he flew in on his own. The only thing said to him was "Hold it " when he flared!
We've seen Colt grow up on DZ. He's packed for many of us. He's a level headed, likeable young man & everybody was hoping he'd do well. He out performed all expectations! Back in the hangar Colt was "stoked" as was Gary Fletcher. Everyone caught their buzz. then the video showed how flawless the jump was! Like Miller said, "It just keeps getting better & better!"
