Dark Elf Helldrake Riders

Like other monsters taken from the Broken Lands the Helldrakes provide an important role in the Dark Elf fleet. The natural habitat of the Helldrakes is the inhospitable Boiling Sea area that makes up much of the western part of the New World. Here Dark Elf Beastmasters and Scouts capture the Helldrakes. Helldrakes captured after hatching have proven to wild to train so they are taken when they are still eggs.

Helldrakes are similar in appearance to dragons, although they are much smaller and sleeker. Even though Helldrakes are smaller than dragons they have been known to attack their larger kin in the wild. Even dragons can go down to Helldrakes. Many scholars in the Old World have compared Helldrakes to wolverines, both are savage and will attack beasts many times their size. While similar in appearance to Cold Ones, Helldrakes are much rarer, making that much more valuable.

Regiment Movers

One of the main uses of Helldrakes is to carry troops stationed on Black Arks over impassable terrain. This is one of the great secrets of success for Dark Elf raiding parties, they are able to surprise enemies by attacking from a direction thought to be naturally protected from attack. Helldrakes cannot carry many troops by themselves so many Helldrakes are needed to perform this task.

Helldrakes in Combat

While used occasionally in land battles Helldrakes are far more often found in naval encounters or ferrying troops. As they are valued much more for the above abilities they are used sparingly in the field. When they are used in land battles they are ridden by small, highly skilled Beastmasters. Their handlers are needed to control these savage beasts, who might otherwise turn and attack the Dark Elf army.

Helldrakes are deadly in a fight. They combine their lightning fast flying ability with their untamed combat abilities. Enemies will go down to razor sharp claws and sharp fangs. There speed and combat potential make them perfect for attacking weaker, less protected troops like machine crews. They are almost never sent against powerful enemies as each Helldrake lost in battle is an enormous loss to the Dark Elves.

Special Rules

Flying Cavalry

As Helldrake Riders are flying cavalry they are always formed as skirmishers. With their large leathery wings Helldrakes can speed across the battlefield making them fast and deadly troops.

Frightening Beasts

Helldrakes are large, hideous beasts, and look like smaller versions of dragons. As such Helldrakes cause fear.
