Twickenham RFC

The Mini Rugby section was started just over ten years ago and has been growing over recent years. Mini Rugby is specifically designed to introduce youngsters to the game and can be played by both BOYS and GIRLS from the ages of five to twelve years. Children play in age groups at Under 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 ensuring that each child is matched by size as well as age.

The youngest groups play a non contact game similar to touch rugby with emphasis on running and handling the ball.

We encourage everyone to get involved with the club including coaching the youngsters, .......... we will give full training.

Training starts at 10.00am, and goes on to approximately 12 noon on Sunday mornings from September through to April. Home games start at around 10.00am and these are advised in the fixture list. The clubhouse is open all morning on Sundays with snacks and soft drinks available to those who would like to watch the training or games. At midday the club bar opens for the service of 'other' refreshments.

Rugby Player

Junior rugby is also thriving at the Old Rutlishians’ with ages 12 to 17 playing regularly on a Sunday.

We also run a number of senior sides of varying standards. If you would like more details, please contact us

The Old Ruts have a policy of encouraging all their players to play sporting rugby and does not support or encourage a "win at all costs" attitude in their children. Wherever possible we ensure that if a youngster turns up to train then we will give them a game as we want the children to enjoy themselves and continue to play for many years to come.

What we expect from our Players

We expect our players to follow our conduct code not what you may see adults play.  It is the code used when all of us started out

  • Play for the fun of it, not just to please your parents or coach.

  • Play by the laws of the game.

  • Do not argue with the referee's decision.

  • Control your temper.

  • It is a team game!  Your team is more important than you, so  play as a team member not a 'star'.

  • Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Don't bully or take unfair advantage of any players.

  • Remember the game is for fun, improving your skills, make friends and feel good.

  • Listen to your coaches and referees, work with team mates.  Without them and your opponents, you cannot play!

What we expect from our Parents

  • Do not force an unwilling child to participate in sport.

  • Children play sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

  • Encourage your child to play by the rules.

  • Teach your child that playing well & fairly is as important as victory.

  •  Never ridicule or yell at your child for making mistakes -when you were a child you made mistakes, didn't you?

  • Remember children learn best by example. Applaud good play by both sides.

  • Do not question the referee's judgement or their honesty.

  • Value the importance of volunteer coaches. They give up their time to provide recreation for your child.

What we expect from our Coaches

  • Do not make too many demands on the young players' time, energy and enthusiasm.

  • Teach that the laws of the game must not be broken.

  • Avoid overplaying talented players. "Average" players need and deserve equal time.

  • Remember  children play for fun - winning is only part of it. Never ridicule children for making mistakes - you make mistakes too.

  • Make sure your teams respect their opponents, as well as the referees and opposing coaches. Do not question referees judgement or honesty.

  • Make sure the team conduct themselves properly at the end of a game.

Kit

Gumshields/Mouthguards

Gumshields/mouthguards are highly advisable for U7 & U8 players and compulsory for U9 upwards.

Boot Studs

Studs with jagged edges are dangerous to other players. Unless boots have moulded plastic/rubber soles, it is important that studs are examined regularly to ensure missing studs are replaced and rough edges smoothed. Studs must also comply to the British Kite Regulations. Plastic studs should not be used.

Severe Weather Clothing

All players should come equipped to cope with the weather conditions that can occur during the winter months. If youngsters are freezing, they are unlikely to enjoy themselves and may be put off winter sport.

Health Matters

Concussion

If any player suffers a knock which results in momentary unconsciousness, confusion, memory loss or unsteadiness, then there is evidence of definite concussion injuries. The player must be taken from the field of play.

No matter of their age, the player has a compulsory twenty one days off rugby.

Tetanus Injection

If not already done so mini rugby players should have a preventative course of tetanus injections. Go to your General Practitioner for advice.

Medical or Other Conditions

If players have any particular condition such as asthma or diabetes which may effect their playing, the team coach must be told
