- Takeuchi
Naoko
武内
直子
- The author of Sailor Moon. The "Take" part of
her name can mean "military."
- Tsukino
Usagi
月野
うさち
Alias: Sailor Moon
- She begins the series as a 14-year-old eighth-grader, and ends as a
sixteen-year old in her second year of high school. She might be older at the
end of the manga; she gets married. AKA "Usako" to her father and
her boyfriend.
Her name means "moon’s rabbit."
Dub Name: Serena
- Tsukino
Shingo
月野
進之
- Usagi&8217;s little brother is much better than she is at school. He
already has a girlfriend, Mika.
Dub Name: Sammy
- Tsukino
月野
育子
- Usagi's mom. Same name as Takeuchi Naoko's mom.
- Tsukino
Kenji
月野
謙之
- Usagi's dad is a professional photographer. Same name as Takeuchi Naoko's dad.
Chiba
Mamoru
地埸
衛
Alias: Tuxedo Kamen/Mask
- The Love Interest. In the anime he starts as a 19-year-old college student
and an orphan who has no memory of his parents. In the manga he is only
seventeen, and someone makes a comment that he lives so well (his own
apartment, car, etc.) because he's the eldest son. AKA "Mamo-chan."
"Mamoru" means "guard" and it is a very popular name in Japan,
spelled many
different ways. In this case, it is spelled with only one kanji. The first
kanji making up his names includes an element for "earth" which is both
his planet and the mystical element he's associated with.
Sailor Saturn is also associated with this element.
Dub Name: Darien Shields.
- Chibi Usa
ちびうさ
Alias: Sailor Chibi Moon
-
- Mizuno
Ami
水野
亜美
Alias:
-
Dub Name: Amy Anderson
Her name means "Water's friend."-no" corresponds roughly to our
"s’". The "inner" bishōjo Senshi
all have family names with "-no" at the end.
- Hino
Rei
火野
レイ
Alias: Sailor Mars
- Rei lives in her grandfather's temple. In the manga, she does this because her
father, a corrupt politician, has little time for her. She has a very hot temper
in the anime. In both versions, she can predict the future. Her element is fire.
She goes to an all-girl Catholic school, a strange choice for a miko, or
Shinto shrine maiden.
Dub Name: Raye Hino
Her name can be read "fire’s soul". By adding 子 (u5B50)
you would get "Reiko,"
one of the many ways to spell this very popular
name for girls. This is entirely too diminutive a form to suit any version
of Sailor Mars! It's also notable that her personal name is spelled out in katakana,
like most of the personal names of the senshi. In one episode while reading
a letter from the future Usagi, Rei makes fun of her writing only in kana, with
no kanji.
- Kino
Makoto
木野
まこと
Alias: Sailor Jupitor
- The association of wood and lightning comes through the oak, which was the
tree sacred to Jupiter. Wood is an element in the Chinese system of magic Japan
inherited.
Dub Name: Lita
Makoto is the virtue most prized by Japanese: faithfulness, loyalty,
steadfastness. As such it is an extremely popular name for both girls and
boys, though I think some kanji spellings are more for one than the other.
Here her name is sounded out in hiragana, the syllabary used to sound out
words in native Japanese.
- Aino
Minako
愛野
美奈子
Alias: Sailor Venus; Sailor V
- The Senshi of Love is also the Senshi of Metal; Venus is associated with
that element in Chinese astrology. Minako is the last of the senshi to
join up with Sailor Moon, although she was the first to appear (as Sailor V.)
She shares Usagi's ineptitude for schoolwork, but she's fabulously coordinated
and a natural athlete. Her parents never appear at all in the anime and only
her mother appears in the manga (and only when she's Sailor V) so for SMAD
I decided her mostly absent dad should become permanently absent. She has
bad luck with love in all versions.
-
Dub Name: Mina
Her name can be rendered "Love's Child for Everyone." Or at least I can
render it that way. The first kanji in "Minako" for "mi" is the same as
for "bi" in "Bishōjo and means the same thing: beautiful or beauty.
- Meiō (Meiou, Meioh)
Setsuna
冥王
せつな
Alias: Sailor Pluto
-
Dub Name:
Setsuna means "moment."
- Tenō (Tenou, Tenoh)
Haruka
天王
はるか
Alias: Sailor Uranus
- Haruka's family is very rich; they own Tenō group. In the manga,
Haruka and Michiru commute to school in their own helicopters!
Dub Name: ?
- Keiō (Keiou, Keioh)
Michiru
海王
みちる
Alias: Sailor Neptune
-
Dub Name: Michelle
- Tomoe
Hotaru
土萠
ほたる
Alias: Sailor Saturn
- Sailor Saturn has the neatest weapon of all the senshi, a glaive.
Dub Name: Hotaru
The first kanji forming "Tomoe" is the one for "earth," that is, soil.
It's a representation of a young plant emerging from the earth. Saturn
is associated with the element of Earth in Chinese magic, probably because
Saturn was the slowest-moving planet known to naked-eye astronomy.
- Ōsaka
Naru
大阪
なる
- Naru is Usagi's best friend. She never exhibits any power in the anime
or the manga, but she does attract a lot of monsters and bad guys. In the
manga she never gets involved with anyone, but in the manga, she hooks up
first with Nephrite and then with Umino Gurio (Melvin.)
Dub Name: Molly
Naru can mean "sound." Usagi's friend spells her name in hiragana, but
the Keitaro's eventual bride in Love Hina uses kanji. There's a pair
of twins in Negima named Narutaki which means "sound of a waterfall."
The first kanji in ōsaka represents the "Oh" sound. It can also
be pronounced "tai" or "dai" as in "Taipan" or "Todai," the nickname of the University of Tokyo. It's easy to remember: Picture a guy telling a fishing story.
- Umino
Gurio
海野
ぐリぉ
- As far as I know no one actually calls him "Gurio" at any time in the
anime or in the manga, but he does have an official personal name. His
hair is sort of light brown in the anime, but he's a blond in the manga.
He's been pestering Usagi forever in both versions, and in both he has
no clue how annoying he can be. If this were a shonen romance (aka harem
comedy) like Oh My Goddess!, Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo, ad
infinitum, Melvin/Gurio would probably be the nerdy hero and for exactly
the same reason Usagi is so popular with girls: he's so damned pathetic
he threatens nobody, and every guy feels like him at least part of the time.
Dub Name: Melvin
- Furuhata
Motoki
吉幡
元基
- Motoki is the Nicest Guy on Planet Earth. Usagi,
Makoto and (probably) every other girl who hangs out
at Crown Arcade (which his family owns) has a crush on him, and he seems
to be oblivious to them. His girl is Reika, a spoiled
rich girl in Takeuchi-sensei's conception.
Dub Name: Andrew
- Furuhata
Unazuki
吉幡
宗奈月
- Motoki's little sister seems to be at least one
year ahead of Usagi. She works as a waitress in her family's restaurant,
Fruit Parlor Crown.
Dub Name: Elizabeth
-
Reika
- Reika is Motoki's g/f in both the anime and the manga
storylines. She's a geology student, maybe in college already, and in the manga
her geology expertise advances the plotline in one chapter when she identifies
the minerals that Beryl's four generals are named after.
Dub Name: ?
The Three Lights
- Seiya
Kō (Kou, Koh)
星矢
光
Alias: Sailor Star Fighter
- Seiya falls in love with Usagi after Mamoru disappears in the final
arc of Sailor Moon. He's more or less the lead singer in the Three Lights.
All the Lights have the same personal name, Kō, meaning "light."
Of course these are assumed names; they are really aliens from the
distant world Kinmoku. Seiya is the one with black hair. The Star Senshi
seem to be boys in normal form but are definitely girls in
senshi form. Their costumes are much more revealing than the other senshi's.
In fact, they are less dressed than most of the bad-girl villains.
In my fanfic, he later becomes Kakyū’s
best diplomat. Or should I say she?
- Taiki
Kō (Kou, Koh)
大気
光
Alias: Sailor Star Maker
- Taiki is the redhead and has the temper to match.
In SMAD, Taiki has a special relationship with his sovereign; he and
Kakyū had a child together
(Prince Kageshirō)
before her arranged marriage.
- Yaten
Kō (Kou, Koh)
夜天
光
Alias: Sailor Star Healer
- Star Healer's attack has the wierdest name: Star Gentle Uterus. The
second manga in "Yaten" (U5929) means "heaven" and is also the first kanji
in Tenō and in Tenchi (Tenchi Muyo.)
- Sakurada
Haruna
桜田
春菜
- The long-suffering homeroom teacher of Usagi. I think she follows her
into high school. There's another Sakurada in Sailor V, a high-ranking
police officer. I decided to make her Haruna's aunt.
Dub Name: Patricia Haruna. This is one of the dumber dub names
because Haruna is actually her personal name.
- Kayama
Mika
香山
みか
-
- Kumada
Yūichirō (Yuuichirou, Yuuichiroh,
Yuichiro)
熊田
雄一郎
- Yūichirō is only present in the anime where he carries a
giant torch for Rei. He must come from money because
in the skiing episode the gang stays at a lodge his family owns.
Dub Name: Chad
-
Alias:
-
