Century Bucks
County Pennsylvania
Welcome to The Olde Bucks Resource Pages. This is, essentially, a rather simple collection of historical data related to eighteenth century Bucks county Pennsylvania. It's the type of information I found very useful while researching my own family's history, and by making it available here I hope to assist others who might share my interests in genealogy and Bucks county history.
First and foremost this site explores the sizeable Dutch community (No, not the Pennsylvania Dutch!) that settled in lower Bucks county during the early to middle 1700's. The Low Dutch Community of Bucks County Pennsylvania provides a little background on the county's "Hollanders" -- who they were, where they came from and how their community developed in the county. Some Early Bucks County Baptisms and Some Early Bucks County Marriages focus primarily on the records of the churches which served this community, providing useful genealogical information as well as interesting insights on the interrelationships between the community's many families. The marriages page also includes data on unions performed by two local justices of the peace who served the county at large. Another interesting aspect of eighteenth century Bucks county is slavery. Few people associate Pennsylvania with slavery, but that institution was relatively commonplace in colonial Bucks county and more than a few of the area's Hollanders engaged in the practice. Bucks County Slave Holders provides a record of both the names of the county's slave holders as well as the number of slaves they held, as registered in compliance with Pennsylvania's Gradual Emancipation Act of 1780 and the 1790 census.
In a slightly different vein, this site also examines Bucks county from a more "revolutionary" perspective. The Bucks County Committee of Safety is a collection of documents and related information on the county's de facto government during the Revolutionary War, an interesting body that supported the cause of liberty and reshaped county politics. And finally, there is Militia & Associated Companies of Bucks County Pennsylvania , which provides information related to the military organization of the county from the period just prior to the French & Indian War through the Revolutionary War. It includes an extensive collection of muster and officer rolls of, and in some cases additional information on, various militia units from Bucks county. It also includes information and documents on the Battle at Crooked Billet Tavern, a 1778 a skirmish fought along the border of Bucks and Philadelphia counties. Brigadier General John Lacey, Bucks county's "Quaker General," was commander of the American force, which included elements of the Bucks county militia.

I hope you find this site interesting, if not useful. Please keep in mind that I'm still in the process of putting this thing together. It is, very much, a work in progress. Feel free to contact me with your comments & suggestions. Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated!
