Militia & Associated Companies of Bucks County Pennsylvania
Captain Henry DARRAH's Company
Henry DARROCH appears on the muster roll of the New Britian Company of Associators in 1775. Unfortunately this particular roll does not specify the rank of the company's individual associators. He is known, however, to have received a first lieutenant's commission when, as part of a 400 man battalion called upon by the county's Committee of Safety to serve with the Flying Camp, he was appointed to the company of his fellow New Britian associator, Captain William ROBERTS, on July 10, 1776. Within a year Lieutenant DARRAH would captain his own company. A return of officer elections, dated May 6, 1777, lists the following officers for the Seventh Company, Fourth Battalion: Captain Henry DAROH, First Lieutenant Joseph GREER, Second Lieutenant William HINES, and Ensign William BOROM, while that of May 10, 1780, lists Captain Henry DARRAH, Lieutenant William HYNES, and Ensign Joseph GREER as the officers of the Eighth Company, Fourth Battalion.
At least two muster rolls of militia companies serving under Capt. DARRAH survived Revolutionary War. The first was recorded December 3, 1777, and after the company was reorganized a second was recorded September 21, 1778. It seems many of the company's associators belonged to the local Presbyterian congregation, and both of these rolls appear in The History of Neshaminy Presbyterian Church of Warwick, 1727-1876, by Rev. D.K. Turner. Turner notes that at the time of his work's 1876 publication, "The originals of these Company Rolls are now in the possession of R.H. Darrah of Hartsville, a great-grandson of the Captain."
