The business of William Main an English chemist commenced around the late 1840s from premises located on the east side of King William St, Adelaide, between the (now) Rundle Mall and Grenfell Street.

Main formed an early partnership with Hindley Street chemist William Geyer and together conducted the two shops in the style of Main & Geyer.

After the deaths of their husbands, the widows continued in partnership for some further years.

By 1885, Elizabeth Main was joined by her son William James in partnership, and together traded in the style of Main & Son from their King William Street shop.

Business continued from this site well into the 1980s.

The displayed blue bottle was dug from a tip dating mid 1890s - c1900.
