Unknown patent: Incorrectly known as Maugham's Patent Bottle. c1850

William Maugham was an English chemist, who actually patented the method of imparting Carrara Marble into gaseous water on Jan 31, 1843.

This bottle, and others differing only by their embossing, were used to dispense this product which was advertised largely as a health reviver and miraculous cure for painful - upset stomach.

Alexander Malcolm the proprietor of the Black Bull Inn, Hindley St, Adelaide, was the first to introduce both the product and bottle to South Australia.

Malcolm's bottles are dark green in colour and date around 1849-1852. They are embossed with his name inside a ribbon which twists around the cylinder. These bottles are rare and quite valuable.
