Adelaide in 1896 looking west.

Laid out in 1837, the city was carved up as north and south Adelaide the sections were divided by the River Torrens.

South Adelaide became the business district, and was made up of 700 of 1042 town acres surveyed.
The remaining 342 town acres made up North Adelaide. The entire locality was surrounded by a green belt of parkland.

Almost directly in the middle, is a faint sign on the side of two storey building announcing that it was the factory of W.N. Crowder & Company, aerated water and ginger beer brewers. (Later Downer & Co, which moved to Waymouth St.)
