Grand Central Hotel
Rundle and Pulteney St
corner, Adelaide.

c1917
The Grand Central Hotel was built on a site formerly occupied by the York Hotel, south-east corner of Rundle Street and Pulteney Street in 1910.

The hotel did not prosper, although it had many important guests, including the Prince of Wales in 1920. It was licended until 1924, after which it was sold to Foy & Gibson who established a department store in the building. It continued to be used as a department store until the mid 1950s.

Foy & Gibson then left the old building to take occupation of newly built premises in Rundle Street, there tradeing as Cox Foyes. The old building was then used by the Government to house the administration of several departments. In 1975/6 it was was demolished to make room for a high rise car park.

The old building had been the only surviving example of giant high Victorian style achitechture that Adelaide possessed.
