BHP came into existence soon after the discovery of an enormously rich ore body in an arid hump-backed hill which rose above the sun-backed Barrier Ranges at Broken Hill in 1885.

In it's first 3 years of operation the proprietary mine produced more than seven million ounces of silver.

BHP by 1936 were mine owners, ship owners, iron and steel manufacturers, and colliery proprietors.
