AND THEN...

Generations come
And
Generations go.
The stuff of life
Transmitted.
Mother, father
To
Son, daugher.
Father, mother
To
Daughter, son.
The years roll by
With incessant beat.
And then...

Cities grow.
Farmland wanes.
Rivers roll.
Cemeteries fill their gullet
With the dream of yesterdays.
Sports heroes,
Generals,
Anonymous faces,
Others,
Strut upon their stage.
Vaudevillians all.
With hooks poised
In the wings of their boastfulness.
They know it not until
Their time is past.
Bullies and victims
Lumped together in the same
Ground.
And then...

Cities fail.
Farmland fills their void.
Woodland reclaims her right.
Civilizations find the curtain closed
Upon their time in the footlights.
New civilizations now dig
The skeletons of uninhabited dwelling places,
Of the tools of lifetimes.
Utensils whose utility has ceased.
To find the past that
Is past.
And then...

Pilate still asks,
"What is truth?"
It seems that
The "truth" of yesterday
Is the fable of tomorrow
The politicians
Gloat and glower
As they press their thumbs
Upon the populace they
"Serve."

Educators claim the
Highest plateaus.
In their arrogance they
Look down upon the masses.
"Clay in need of us;
"The Benevolent Potters."

Clerics pound their
"Bully Pulpits"
Of platitude.
Sure of their own
Invaluability.
Ignoring their own faults
As they dwell with
Ponderous piousness
Upon the faults they see
In others.

Even while
From all
The Sea of Humanity
Seeps through the cracks
Of those tightly constricted
Dams of Falesness.
The flow of civilization continues.
And then...

"The Road Less Traveled?"
It does not exist.
The Preacher of Ecclesiastics
Said it well,
"Ther is nothing new
"Under the sun."
Only the fable of newness
Pokes her head
From beneath the brow
Of the each of the many
As they move with
The Rocket of Newness
Unknowing they ride
The Trolly of oldness.
As they paddle
Sinking rowboats
Into the torrent
Of the River
Of Swift Moving Time,
They follow their King.
The lemmings
Of humanity
All into the Sepulchre
Of Forgetfulness.
And then...

What?

He shall descend
With a shout!
The earth shall move
Into newness.
Not the newness of
Man centered "cultures."
But,
The newness of renewal
As the Cosmos sheds her
Robe of reprobation
And clothes herself with
The Glory of God.
The tiring march of humanity
Ends.
And then...

The Rest of Restoration
Begins

Statement of Faith
To the left is an old picture of Amy, Linda, and me.  It is from the early summer of 1971 and is near the door of our first pastorate at Glade Branch Baptist Church (SBC) of Pitkin, Louisiana.  I have very fond memories of this church and her people.  One of my few regrets is that I've never gone back to visit.  I just didn't feel it would be proper as a former pastor.  To do so might have been, unintentionally, to interfere in the work of the present pastor.

Jesus Christ died in time so that others could live in eternity!
THIS NEEDED TO BE LOOKED INTO!

The first thing you ought to know is that my son, Ethan, went to a private school which did not have bus service.  I had to take him to school and pick him up.

It was during the first heavy snow of the season that I decided to stay home rather than go out on the road on my job.  I worked typing up the church newsletter and some other matters that I could do at home.

About 2:00 in the afternoon there was a knocking at our door.  I went and found a 4th grade boy who sometimes played with Ethan, and a little girl I didn't know.  They said, "Our school let us out early and our moms are not home.  Can we come in here where it is warm?"

I said, "Of course.  But, I'm going to have to go and pick up Ethan.  If you guys got out early so did he.  Just stay in the kitchen, watch T. V., and you can have some of the candy we've got on the kitchen counter."

Imagine my surprise when I returned home with Ethan.  The little girl, who turned out to be a kindergarten student, had called 9ll and said, "I don't know where my mommy is but a nice man said that he'd give me candy to stay at his house."

I had to explain that one to some nice people in blue suits!

I did what I thought was a good deed and yet others, on the face of the evidence at first, did not consider it to be such a good thing!  Why was that?  They simply reacted from what they thought might have been the truth.

Don't get me wrong!  I'm glad that they did check it out.  Too many bad things do happen today and it is better to be careful and wrong than to not use propler caution.  And, the little girl was smart to call.  After all she didn't know me.  ...although the little boy with her did!

But, this did set me thinking:  How often are we wrong in our thinking about eternal matters?

How is it with your soul?

     Do you know Jesus?

Do you know that Jesus loves you?  That's not just a children's song title.  Romans 5:6 says, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

Isn't that great!  Jesus doesn't say that you've got to change or to "clean up your act."  You may well do just that; and, it would be great.  But, Jesus calls you just as you are today!

Accept Him today.  He's a great friend to have!
