Food patterns of Germany

German food is much
more than just Sauerkraut! - although Sauerkraut is possibly the
most famous item of German food known in the world after the
Frankfurter.
Germany can be divided into "culinary regions": Many of
the typical North German dishes were taken from Scandinavian,
Polish or Russian cuisines, where meat specialties include bacon
and ham and an enormous variety of sausages. Westfalia is very
well known for its speciality meats and sausages and of course
for its pumpernickel bread. In Southern Germany people prefer to
eat dumplings instead of plain potatoes. In Swabia the cuisine is
characterised by traditional "Spätzle" a special type
of pasta with various garnishes. A typical dish of Southern
Germany is the so called Leberkäse ("liver cheese")
which in fact has nothing to do with cheese but is made from
ground beef, pork, bacon and spices. In the Western region -
which contains the Rhine valley districts on both sides of the
Rhine - the French cuisine has a considerable influence on food
and eating habits.
