"As soon as men accept money as an equivalent for life, the sale of living activity becomes a condition for their physical and social survival. Life is exchanged for survival. Creation and production come to mean sold activity. A man's activity is productive, useful to society, only when it is sold activity. And the man himself is a productive member of society only if the activities of his daily life are sold activities. As soon as people accept the terms of this exchange, daily activity takes the form of universal prostitution. Fredy Perlman - The Reproduction of Everyday Life
At the end of April/beginning of May, I collected Euros, painted them white and placed them in boxes (bearing the above instructions) at selected locations on the streets of Amsterdam. This is a work specific to Amsterdam because of the city's role as the the birthplace of the Provos, whose most famous action was the white bicycle scheme (where bikes painted white were distributed for free with similar instructions as I have used for the Witgeld). However, unlike bikes, money has no use-value of its own. money only functions as a medium of exchange.
"The movement of the commodity is therefore a circuit. On the other hand, the form of this movement precludes a circuit from being made by the money. The result is not the return of the money, but its continued removal further and further away from its starting-point. So long as the seller sticks fast to his money, which is the transformed shape of his commodity, that commodity is still in the first phase of its metamorphosis, and has completed only half its course. But so soon as he completes the process, so soon as he supplements his sale by a purchase, the money again leaves the hands of its possessor". Karl Marx - Capital
"The coin becomes more and more a symbol of its official content.... Their metallic content is determined purely arbitrarily by law, and thus their function as coinage becomes independent of their value. Hence, the further step to quite worthless symbols is possible." Karl Marx - Capital
