The feeling that your head is exploding...
The feeling of your spinal chord being pressed in to your brain...
Furious aggression for which there is no outlet.
That's the worst thing.
A clear awareness that your chance of survival is nil.
Ulrike Meinhoff writing in 1972 about the aucoustic torture she was subjected to in German prisons
The pictures above are stills from video documentaion of a performance/installation at Artoll in the Rheinische Kliniken on the 1st of May 2002.

Amplifiers and contact microphones were rigged up to a satellite dish to produce constant feedback. The noise was played at maximum in an empty room in the pyschiatric hospital (now used for art residencies).

In addition to the pain and disorientation caused by the noise, the infrasound was at danmgerously high levels and caused me to feel physically ill for several hours afterwards.

The work was halted when other artists working in building demanded that the piece be brought to an end....

Torture continues to be used in prisons across the world.
