| SAND SHARKS IMUA T-SHIRT We have had five different designed sand sharks T shirts. This is the fifth design and it was done by Kimo. Years ago we had a contest for naming our tennis team and a little guy won with the name Sand Sharks. After our team was named we designed and made our flag and then did the same for our shirts. Kimo's design will probably stay with us for a long time because I feel it has a lot of significance for the team. Let's start with the back of the shirt: OKM: Old Keene Mill Home Grown: The majority of our players started at age 7 and stayed till they graduated from high school. Some came back to coach our kids. Green Leaves on sleeve: This is a Maile Lei. It signifies Strength, Power and Purity. It is considered one of the most precious Hawaiian Leis. Shark Teeth Pointing Up: Hawaiian symbol for honoring the heavens Shark Teeth Pointing Down: Hawaiian symbol for honoring the animals and mamals on earth. Black and White Circle: Ying Yang symbol with a shark fin. Symbolizes balance in life. SAND SHARKS: THAT'S US IMUA: Hawaiian word meaning "GO FORWARD" When someone isn't doing well or has fallen, we say IMUA, get up and keep going forward. NOW THE REST OF THE STORY: From ancient Hawaiian times to present, each Hawaiian family had an AUMAKUA, including the Lee family. An Aumakua is your family guardian in the form of an animal/mamal. All your ancestors that have gone before you become present through that Aumakua and hence can guide you through good and bad times. The Lee family Aumakua just happens to be the Shark. |
