2739 : KAYIN NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

The Kayin New Year Celebration for the year AD2000 ( Karen Lunar
Year ( K.E 2739 ), which falls on the 6th of January 2000 was
celebrated from the 5th to 7th January 2000 at the Maha
Hsay Wingaba Arlein Nga Hsint Buddhist Monastery, Insein Township, Yangon,
under the auspices of the kayin New Year Celebration Central Committee (
Greater Yangon).
On the 5th of January 2000 at noon, the Information and
Cultural Show room was officially opened by the authorities concerned and in
the evening the Kayin cultural shows and national dances of various dialect
groups were presented.
On the New Year Day, the 6th of January 2000 at 6:00 am
in the morning the Kayin National Flag was hoisted in honour of the kayin
national heritage, and was followed by official ceremony inaugurated by the
presidential speech by Prof Dr Saw Simon Tha, a neuro –surgeon; and on behalf of
the kayin Patrons the New Year Message was presented by Saw Baldwin Khaing Oo,
Lecturer of Yangon Technological University.
The outstanding students who passed matriculation with flying
colours were honoured and given prizes, and the ceremony was closed by the
singing of Kayin National Anthem.
From noon time onwards there were joyful celebration, especially a
typical Kayin Boxing tournament. In the evening a special traditional singing
and dancing competitions were presented.
The whole day on the 7th of January 2000, Boxing
tournaments, cultural shows, traditional dances of different dialects from
various areas and singing competitions were also performed.
