Taimat bustles in just in time for class. She strides to her desk at the front of the room, then turns to face the students. “Alright class! Just let me take roll. . .now, who’s here?” Taimat's curly brown hair swished slightly about her shoulders as she looked around the room. Taimat soon replaces the frown of concentration with a smile, and chuckles a bit at the students standing in the back of the room. "Come on class, those pillows don't bite. Take a seat." Her green eyes scan the large room quickly as she makes note of who is present. She flips back and forth through her notes, the parchment rustling slightly as she waits for everyone to find a seat. Glancing up again once the scuffling has stopped, she stands, ready to begin. “Everyone please put your wands away for now. Don’t grumble. I promise you will be able to use them soon. I would like to congradulate you all on your performance on the last test. Grades were, on average, very good. Today we begin our next unit. In this unit I will teach you some useful jinxes, hexes, and the like which you can use to protect yourself.” Sensing eyes darting eagerly around the room, she adds quickly, “But you will not practice them on each other! Have I made myself clear? All spellcasting in this unit will be performed mostly upon inanimate objects or non-magical creatures.” “To begin, can anyone tell me what the Knockback Jinx does?” “It will knock back an object. It is easiest to cast upon smaller and lighter objects, meaning that it requires quite a bit of skill to be cast successfully upon a large, heavy object. As the caster’s skill grows, he or she will be able to knock back larger, heavier objects and will also be able to knock objects back farther.” “Now, the proper incantation is ‘Flipendo.’ Repeat after me. ‘Flipendo!’” “Good job! Now, does everyone have a pillow in front of them?” “We will be practicing the Knockback Jinx on these pillows. Try to knock these pillows off your table into the middle of the room. They have been charmed so that, when they reach the center of the room or when they hit the floor, they will return to you. Once you can successfully knock your pillow to the center of the room, try to knock it back as it returns to you. Are there any questions?” “All right. Wands out, and. . .begin!” “For homework, please describe a situation in which the Knockback Jinx would be useful, and also describe something upon which it would be difficult to cast the spell. Homework will be worth thirty points, so don’t forget!” |
