| Shiprock 2003 |
Shiprock was named that by the whites because it looks like the back half of a sinking ship. To the indians, it is sacred and looks like an eagle wing. The very top of the volcano was ground level back when it was erupting. The volcano super-heated the rock around it and that rock did not erode way but 1,700 feet of earth for miles around did erode away. By the way, Shiprock is the most spectacular volcano I have ever seen. Much more interesting than Devil's Tower. |

We parked the Dodge Spirit at the base of Shiprock so you can get a feel for how big 1,700 feet is. Rob climbed up the rubble pile above and to the left of the car but, he is too small to see! |

After we went here, some folks told me that the indians sometimes take pot shots at folks! However, I learned later this may just be folks who try to climb Shiprock without permission from the indians first. |

This is one of 3 dikes associated with Shiprock. It goes on for at least 4.5 miles to the west. If you squint, you can see me standing next to the dike. Like Shiprock, these dikes were all underground when the lava was flowing and erosion over time exposed them. |

There is the car but Rob is just a small dot at the top of the rubble pile. |
