Getting down the first 40 feet of Mooney Falls is easy ...well going down those rock steps made me pay close attention! However, from there there is no path what-so-ever! Everywhere we looked on the level I was on or the level below where Robbie was, there is a 160 foot drop ...straight down! We looked for about 5 minutes (it seemed longer) for the way down.
We finally looked around to the back of the rock steps and found a cave. Actually on the way down, there are two caves. According to the research I did, shortly after Mooney's death, minors dug these caves that go behind the travertine rock layers.
After the caves comes the un-nerving part. You literally need to rock climb straight down the last 1,000 feet ...Okay, it's only about 60 feet or so, but when you go down it for the first time, it seems a lot higher! There are chains to white knuckle and metal spikes for footholds.
