| I hiked up from the Pinnacles camp site at night and got to the South Rim at a little after 4am. This was the coldest I have ever been in my life! It was 96 degrees at the Basin the afternoon before so, I did not take a warmth nor a wind layer. It was 40 degrees with wind gusts ...must have been 50 MPH. I saw the Milky Way more clearly than at any other place. I thought the air would be very dusty, but it was not the case! | |||||||||||||||
| Only the west outlook of the South Rim was open due to a nesting bird. My next trip will be along the Dodson Trail so I can get a pic of the South Rim at dawn with the sun behind me. | |||||||||||||||
| Just a minute or so after sunrise, these lit-up hills to the south-west of the Rim is one of my top 5 pics ever! About 10 minutes later, these were a dull grey/brown color. I hit it just right. This is why I got here at sunrise. The Dodson Trail goes through these hills going parallel the South Rim cliffs. | |||||||||||||||
