SPOT satellite message device SPOT home page
After you click the "ON" button, the unit will attempt to find one of several low altitude orbiting satellites. The lights will blink once each 3 seconds. After some time, the light associated with the message button pushed will stay on for 5 seconds indicating that the message has been sent. You might need to repeat the send a couple-3 times over 20 minutes to ensure that an orbiting satellite is in position to receive the message signal.
When you hike alone, you are not alone!
COST
The unit itself costs about $150 at REI or Bass Pro or at the SPOT site
The annual service fee is under $12
The annual rescue insurance is under $8 (well worth it considering a rescue could                                                                cost thousands!)
(NOTE: Look for links in the upper right corner to switch from road view to satellite picture view.)
"OK" link for Mt Rushmore
OK button: The SPOT internet site allows for up to 10 e-mail addresses and cell phones to receive an "OK" status message along with a link showing road and satellite views based upon GPS coordinates. The three links to the right are from my most recent camping trip through NM, CO, WY, SD and Kansas.
"OK" link to Devil's Tower
"OK" link to Kansas High Point
911 button: The SPOT internet site will notify local rescue authorities based upon the GPS coordinates.
HELP button: The SPOT internet site allows for up to 10 e-mail and cell phones (a seperate list from the OK button) to receive a low priority "help" message. This might mean anything based upon that trip's plans.
