| I had a few hours after rushmore and crazy horse and asked at the campsite if there was anything else around there to see. They said Jewel Cave. It turns out that this cave is the second largest in the world (142 miles of cave) behind Mamouth cave (370 miles). Based upon the airflow in some of the remote tunnels, they estimate that Jewel Cave is only about 3% documented and that there may be over 1,000 miles of cave! | ||||||||||||
| As the limestone disolved, the water did not go anywhere and the limestone re-crystallised all around the surface of this cave ...just like a geode. This layer is about 6 inches thick. | ||||||||||||
