Tent Rock Mountains
Layers of volcanic ash built up over thousands of years.
The trail eventually ends up above the slot canyons on a ridge with near vertical sides. It is very intimidating to be there and not see the sides of the ridge.
The volcanic ash erodes except where boulders compress the ash
under them. This creates the upside-down cone shapes and where
the tent rocks got their names.
A long slot canyon can be hiked. ...really cool!
