| The pictures from the top are not nearly as spectacular as the ride up and down. There are no guard rails and beyond about 11 miles, the roads are packed dirt. The thought of a wash-out of the dirt is constantly on your mind! This did not seem to bother a marmot who watched me go up. I was in my lowest gear going down but it did not slow the car enough. The really tense moment was on the way down when my brakes failed! The pedal went all the way to the floor! (remember ...no guard rails!) My emergency brake got me to the next pull-off where a tow truck was able to get me down. Pikes Peak was much more thrilling a drive than any amusement park ride I have ever been on! One trip per life-time to Pikes Peak is quite adequate! |
