Now, after 5 years and more than 16.000 km cycling on Japanese roads (as of August 1997), I decided to write down my experiences and some of my favourite routes.

I have to admit most of these kilometers were produced within the city boundaries of Sendai and Sapporo. Still, I made some tours, especially in Hokkaido and here they are!

I also have some general comments about riding bicycle in Japan and my experience of transporting my bicycle by airplane.

For 4 years I had a Specialized Sequoia touring bicycle with 28/38/48 (front) and 12-28 (rear) gears. After 11.000 kms I had no complains about the bicycle and repairs were limited to tyres, brake gums and spokes of the rear wheel.

Since 1997 I have a Araya bicylce with a crank set of 30/42/52 (front) and 11-24 (rear). Also here no complains up to now. After 6500 km the rear tyre looks pretty worn down, so I have to change it soon.
