The spectator control...

The fourth control was set to bring the runners through a spectator control. It served its purpose well -- we had a reasonable crowd of spectators (including a newspaper reporter, a photographer, and a TV camera).

Mikell actually lost a few seconds on this control. When he came out of the forest after punching at number three, he saw tree tops that he thought were the trees around the pond. Actually, they were trees a bit south of the pond. So, Mikell drifted a bit off the direct line. I don't think this could have cost more than a few seconds.

At the spectator control James was ahead of both Mikell and Mark by about 25 seconds.

On the next leg James made a small mistake that probably accounts for Mikell's margin of victory.
