| Saturday, May 24, 2003 - Park Jefferson Speedway Heat - John again started from the 5th spot in his heat race, but would move into the top-3 before our season's first battle with the mechanical gremlins would start. The engine would lose oil pressure over the closing laps and John would nurse it home in the 4th position. The crew would work frantically between the heat and the feature to get the car repaired but the problem turned out to be terminal. Rather than lose an entire night's points John would borrow our first modified from Korey Woelber for the A-feature. A Feature - John would need to drop to the rear of the field for the start of the A after switching cars. John set out from the 18th spot and would struggle early to get a handle on the car before getting a feel for the car again and passing up to 11th in the field by the drop of the green flag. A fortuitous caution flag with about 5 laps remaining enabled John to stay on the lead lap as leaders Jason Edwardson and Rich Hesse were bearing down on him. The car was actually pretty good at the finish of the race as John would pass 3 cars in those closing laps. That finish would get John 30 points and enable us to keep within sight of point leader. Standings - What was bound to be a very bad night for the point leader was actually tolerable. John would fall to 4th in the points just 18 behind the leader Hesse. But the season is still young and there's plenty of time to climb back to the top. John would be just 8 points behind the 2nd place car of Jason Edwardson. |
