Wednesday, June 27, 2001 - Buena Vista Raceway (Alta, IA)
Heat - John had a pretty unlucky draw for the heat race he would start 7th in an 8 car field that included Mike Jensen, Jim Thies, Rich Hesse, Ricky Stephen, and Reece Coffee. Given that stout lineup John was unable to move up much in his heat race he battled most of the race with Reece Coffee. The 14R that had started on the outside pole fell out of the race. John again struggled to get a handle on the McCreary's and finished a disappointing 7th place.
A Feature - John started 18th in the 24 car A feature field and after the numerous (4-5) cautions in the first 5 laps he restarted in 11th. John would battle back and forth with Jim Thies for several laps with Thies leading down the back stretch, and John down the front stretch. By lap 10 John was still in 10th place. Over the final 10 laps John struggled to gain traction on the drying track. He exhibited some great throttle control in the corners easing it through and easing back on the throttle on the exit. Although we learned quite a bit, which is starting to sound like a broken record, he faded over the closing laps as his fuel load went away and lost the 12th spot to the 22R of Doug Riley on the final lap.
