--stories by different family members submitted by Sherry Bell
Dear Gladys, Here's some history on our grandparents. Mom had all these names written down and who they married. I so some of the dates from a book some family member had written. I don't know how right they wree. as timne goes on and I find time I'm plainning on tying things mommy told me about her family. She always talked about them and knew each name and who each married right up to her last days. I heard her tell often how her dad (grandfather cornett), when he first came to Ky. whenever he would go anywhere, as he walked out, he would reach back and straightened up the weed to keep anyone from finding him. Everyone said he came to Ky to keep from going to the war. since Barbary was born in NC, I believe he was straighteneing the weeds to keep from Betsy finding him. Barbary being from NC, it sounds like they might have run away together. As time goes on I will send you more history about the family. sorry I took so long about sending you this. Love, Madaline
(note from sherry: This is about Wilburn (William) son of David)

Wilburn's Father was supposedly a doctor during the civil war and treated soldier's on both sides, which made the Va home guards angry and he was killed by them. When Wilburn's Father died he took two children ( Renee, Suze) and left his pregnant wife and other child. He also brought with him a half indian servant girl named Barbary Lockheart, and headed to KY. They left VA and headed toward, Brushy Fork area of John's Creek KY, near Inez, KY and lived under a rock cliff.
By the time the second winter came they were living at Coldwater Fork, of Rock Castle Creek in Martin Co. KY

Wilburn Cornett came to Kentucky from Virginia in 1865. It had been handed down" orally that he escaped union soldiers after the soldiers had killed his father. The Cornett's were southerners and had fought and supported the south during the Civil War. It was after the war that the Union Soldiers had killed Wilburns father. Wilburn left Virginia with two of his children, a brother, and a hired girl named Barbary Lockhart, who was pregnant Wilburns child. Wilburn and his brother built a log cabin and stayed there for the first year, his brother ended up settling down over by Lily Cornett Woods and Wilburn and his family settled down in RockCastle in Martin Co. all in KY.
