Letter from Hannah Cornutt Magee to James R. Cornutt

Introduction

Hannah (Cornutt) Magee, author of DESCENDENTS of ARCHELUS CORNUTT the Son of James Cornutt 1743-1956, wrote this letter to my Uncle JAMES R. CORNUTT, the son of my Grandfather Nathaniel Grover Cornutt. All spelling is as written! It is a wonder how any spelling of names were ever figured out when people wrote in script.

Dear Sir:

Let me first introduce myself. I am the daughter of John Henley Cornutte, in the present age called Cornett. We descended from James Canutte who served in the Revolutionary war 1775- (1783). Also home guard in Va. For his service received a grant of several hundred acres of land in what was then known as Fin Castle Co. Va, but now Grayson Co. Va. from Patrick Henery in 1779. But the grant was not completed until Govenor Thomas Jefferson authorized it after his election governor in 1780. This record came from Williamsburg Va. James Canutte had a brother David I wonder if David was the missing name in the record your father gave to C.L.Cornett of 1410 Vine, Cincinnati Ohio.

I have that record but I don't have any record of his brother except David. James had the following sons Cal Archy, Billie, John, Reuben, Davy & Jesse; I have no records of any girls. Col Archie Canutte son of James Canutte served as a major in Col Winsteds division the only unit from Va. in the Mexico War under General Scott. He served in the Texas War, he graduated from a military Acadamy in Va. And retired from army life a Col. This record of Col Archie was obtained from Richmond Va. Col. Archie is the father of my grand father Geo Bourne Cornett who is the father of my father John Henley Canutt. My father came from Elk Creek Valley Grayson Co. Va. in 1866. He made a trip from Kentucky to his old home at Comers Rock Grayson Co. Va. in 1916. Where he obtained quit a bit of history on the family record. And I picked it up from there. Am working on it yet would be glad if you or your father could help me link us up togather. We have often wondered why and when the name was changed could your father give the name of the judge he refered to as the one who otherized it.

Also give his name and his family record C.L. Cornett said he had forgotten his name. I would be glad for any information of interest. I have a lot more records but gave a few just to show we are and what I am working on. I am 72 years old. I have a short sketch of Davy or David. A great grand son named Guy Morgan Canutt gave my father a short sketch. Guy Morgan Canutt was district Supt of Northfork McDowell County W. Va. in 1916.Later went to Mich. Later died as I have learned from the postmaster at North Fork W. Va. Who is Clyde Cornett descendent from the Cornetts at Comers Rock Grayson Co. Va.

I've been scattern in this letter but hope we all receive some information by it. I plan on printing my records by spring do you folks care for a copy? Let me hear from you soon. You can give this letter to your father as perhaps he know more or can tell me where to find out more.

Sincerely

Hannah (Canutt) Magee
