Unspoken: Chapter 1
The first time Lilith ever saw Caine was when she was perched on the hill that overlooked her small village. Leaning against the only tree that sat on the hill, she watched the people of her village hurry to accomplish their day to day tasks. He seemed to fit in perfectly with everyone. Yet, something made him stand out in her eyes. Silently there on that hill top, she watched him. Watched his every move, his every action. She tried to figure out why her heart immediately went out to him. As if it had been searching for him her whole life.
Then he turned and she could have sworn he looked straight at her. She was too far away to tell exactly what he was looking at. But time seemed to freeze. Then he turned away and she let out the breath she didnt realize she was holding. He wasnt looking at her. It was stupid to think so. She was too far away to bring attention to herself.
Later that day, she ran into him again.
They passed each other on the street. Their eyes locked together as they went their opposite ways, both turning to keep the other in sight as they kept walking. And both immediately turning to apologize to the person they ran into. Embarrassed, they continued their separate ways.
But fate brought them together again.
It was a small party. Sheris party. Caine was in town to visit Sheri and her family. He was one of the only wolves that were allowed anywhere near the village. He watched her from across the room. Not sure why he was drawn to her. It would never work out. He was too different. But he couldnt take his eyes from her. He leaned against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest as he pretended to listen to the chatter of the people around him. She stood a little ways away, laughing and dancing with a group of friends. She was beautiful. Her black hair cascading down her back in layers, her pale skin seemed to grow with its own light. The dress she wore, was short enough to be stylish, but long enough to be modest. She wore no shoes, but a silver chain with tiny bells around one ankle that chimed cheerfully with every move she made.
It is not meant to be. A voice in his ear told him. Startled, his head snapped to look at Sheri as a mischievous smile slowly rose on her heavily painted lips. Or maybe it was. Without another word, she grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him across the room yelling, Lilith!
And then those dark eyes were on him. Her smile never faded, but her eyes showed the shock she felt.
Lilith, this is Caine. Hes a dear friend of mine. Sheri almost shoved him into Lilith, but he quickly regained his composure. Her dangerous smile never left as she continued to chatter to the two of them. I wanted you two to meet. Seeing as you both are very good friends of mine and Caine isnt around very often.
Lilith tried to speak several times, but words never seemed to come to her. Instead she just smiled and tried to keep her gaze from locking with Caines. Which they seemed to do. Often. And then just as suddenly as Sheri appeared, she darted back into the crowd, suddenly having more pressing matters to deal with.
Almost like an unspoken agreement, Lilith and Caine both drifted towards the back of the house where it was quieter. Caine opened the back door and Lilith walked out onto the deck, her eyes seeking the starry sky above them.
Gods above, why do I feel like this?
Caine stood at the railing, overlooking the scenery that was spread out before him. The house was perched on the edge of a hill. The back porch had a perfect view of the rolling hills that surrounded the village. His eyes looked, but didnt see. His thoughts were elsewhere.
So, why havent I ever seen you before?
Her voice was like a melody in his ears. Soft, quiet, and musical. When she moved to stand beside him, his fingers tightened on the railing as he fought the urge to put his arm around her and pull her closer.
I dont live in the area. He heard himself say.
His voice rumbled in her ears. Deep, intimate, shaking her to the core. Her body wanted to melt against his. She wanted to feel his arms around her. She wanted
Oh? Where do you live? She risked a sideways glance in his direction and caught the flicker of something in his eyes. Regret? Sorrow? She frowned.
I live further north. Lohainn.
Her frown deepened a bit as her gaze returned to the night sky. Ah, so thats why Ive never seen you. He was a wolf. Their kind rarely mingled with each other. Tigers and wolves just didnt mix.
Is that a problem? He allowed himself to finally face her just in time to see her spin towards him, pure shock on her face.
Of course not! Why would that-- She cut herself off as she shook her head and calmed herself. I never meant--
This time, he cut her off. Without realizing what he was doing, he tilted her face up towards him and lowered his head to hers. Her lips met his halfway and they shared their first soul-searing kiss. They felt it to the bottom of their hearts, to the tips of their toes. It spread through them both as they stepped towards each other, her arms sliding around his neck, one of his arms moving around her waist as his other hand remained at the back of her neck.
After a moment, they pulled away and looked into each others eyes. Neither of them knew exactly what they saw reflected there, but it wasnt long before they both realized what they just did.
Jumping away from each other, Caine spun away as Liliths hand rose to her lips in shock. Caine moved as far away from her as he possibly could and leaned against the rail, his eyes closed, his breathing labored. Lilith stood there for only a moment before she turned and hurried back into the house. Sheri watched from a distance as she pushed her way through the crowds and disappeared into the streets. Then she joined Caine outside.
I never intended for you to scare her off, you know. Sheri tried to joke, but her smile faded as Caine spun on her, his eyes blazing.
Why? You toy with peoples lives because you think its a game. One you enjoy playing as long as you hold all the cards.
Caine, I never-- Sheri backed away as Caine moved towards her. When she flinched away from him, he froze in place then turned away again, gripping the railing so hard she was afraid it might splinter. You really do love her, dont you? She spoke the words softly, but her eyes glittered with interest.
Caines grip only tightened further. He refused to love a feline. It just wasnt meant to be. Their kinds were just too different. It was why they remained, more or less, strangers for so long.
Were not as different as you think. Sheri said, as if reading his mind. She had a way of doing that.
The next morning, Lilith woke to the sun shining in her face. She stretched lazily and yawned. It was only when she swung her legs over the side of the bed, that she remembered what had happened only hours before. The dress that lied crumpled on the floor, was a painful reminder.
Why did he affect her like this? There were many guys in the village that tried to get her attention. She showed her interest to a few, but none of them made her feel like this. Like if she stood, she would float away. If she watched him walk away, her world would shatter. If she didnt see him right now, she would go insane.
She dressed quickly, not sure what she was going to do. She ran a comb through her hair before she hurried out the door. It was then that she almost collided with just the man she was going to see.
Caine caught her in his arms as she stumbled into him. He held her close a moment longer than he should have before he set her on her feet. Im sorry. I just His voice trailed off as he sighed, running a hand through his already disheveled hair.
Lilith, who is it? A voice called from the kitchen. Panic gripped her, as she spun around and called back, No one, Mother. Im going out for a bit. Her mother would be shocked to find out that she was talking to a wolf. Most thought their kind to be feral and untrustworthy.
Without another word, she turned and walked down the street. Like, last night, as an unspoken agreement, they found a place where they could talk without being interrupted. Lilith found herself leading him to the hill where she first caught sight of him.
Im sorry for last night. Caine said after a moment. He avoided looking at her. He knew he wouldnt be able to do what he came to do if he ended up caught in her gaze again. I never meant to He trailed off again.
Lilith was silent as she watched him. She couldnt help it. She took in every detail. His brown hair was messy, uneven, and littered with golden highlights. His eyes were so shockingly blue that she often found herself lost in them. He obviously slept poorly last night, because there were circles under his eyes. He looked everywhere but at her. He tried to keep his face neutral, but she could read the sorrow and regret that was in his eyes.
And it tore her apart. She wasnt sure what bothered her more. That he was troubled because of her, or that he was troubled at all. All she wanted to do was take him in her arms and remove that look from his face. She wanted to see him smile, to laugh. She wanted to see him look at her again like he did last night.
Her silence ate at him. He assumed she was upset for what he did. He never should have even lied a hand on her. Ill be leaving tomorrow. Youll never see me again.
No. The single word left her mouth before she could even think it through. Startled by her quick, sharp response, Caine looked at her. As soon as his eyes met hers, her heart skipped a beat and her eyes fluttered close. She had never felt so much pain, as the pain she felt when she heard him utter those words. The thought of never seeing him again made her tremble and want to cry. Cry harder than she has ever cried in her entire life. You cant. Her voice broke as a sob caught in her throat. A single tear slid down her cheek.
Immediately, Caine moved towards her and pulled her into his arms, wiping the tears from her face. The action caused more to fall. One of his arms slid around her shoulders as his other hand slid through her hair. He held her close as she cried into his chest. She leaned against him, clinging to him so tightly, it almost hurt. But he would have it no other way. His hand trailed through her hair and down her back as he tried to soothe her trembling frame. Okay. He said as he pressed a gently kiss to the top of her head.
They spent the entire day together, at the base of that tree. Caine was leaning back against the trunk of the tree as Lilith was curled up on his lap. She had fallen asleep as the sun warmed her skin. Caine took the opportunity to watch her.
She was beautiful. Gods, she was beautiful. Far more beautiful that any of the girls back home. Her fair skin was satin smooth, and softer than silk. His fingers trailed over the exposed skin on her shoulder as she slept. Her hair caught the sun and he could have sworn he saw blue highlights in its ebony depths. Her eyelashes were dark and thick as they fanned across her cheeks. Her eyes were a deep, chocolate brown as they fluttered open and met his.
Lilith took in his already familiar face, and smiled sleepily. Lying her head back on his shoulder, she snuggled closer to him, slipping her arms down around his waist. She loved the feel of his body against hers, his arms around her. Occasionally, she stole a kiss from his lips, the action as comfortable and expected as if they have been doing it for years.
Nothing could keep the smile from rising on his lips.
