Part 1 : Invitation

A treasure hunt?

Yea, its one of those special invitation things. I heard only four people can get in.

Some treasure hunt.

We laughed and made our way to class.

My name is Melanie. Ive gone to this school for nine years and Im finally a junior. I cant wait to be done with school all-together.

On top of being a decent student, Im also a witch. I know what youre thinking. Witches dont exist. But they do! They just arent what you read about in books or see in movies.

Ive only just recently broke into my abilities, so Im still pretty knew at the whole thing. But I find it fun none-the-less.

After school, I usually hang around a bit before leaving, but today I had the feeling that I should get home.

My mother, Anne, met me at the door.

People always say we look alike, my mother and I. I guess I can see where they get it from. We do look almost exactly alike. The only real difference is that my hair is lighter and shes older.

While were here, I might as well tell you more about me: Im a little over five feet, five inches tall, with golden brown hair, and dark brown eyes. My skin is pale and kept that way by avoiding the sun (Im a witch not a vampire, remember?).

As soon as I walk in the door, Mom hands me and envelope.

This came in the mail for you. That was all she said before she went back to cleaning. I shrugged and made my way to my room down the hall.

I dropped my bag onto the floor and fell onto my bed. I stared at the envelope for a few minutes before opening it.

I rarely get mail, computers have taken over most mail business these days. As I look at the senders address, I find that its no one I recognize. Curious, I tear open the envelope, eager to find whats inside.

Its one of those invitations to that treasure hunt. I stare unbelievingly at the invite. The page was adorned with flames, which was ironic in my mind. I had always found myself connected to fire somehow. I skimmed the page to find that the hunt would be in an abandoned field next to the run down warehouse on the outskirts of town, and that I was one of the few that was invited. It would take place tomorrow.

Part 2: Unknown Party Guests

Of course I accepted the invitation. I couldnt pass up something as unusual as this.

The next day I found myself outside the abandoned warehouse with 3 other girls, that I didnt know . They were all wearing a single color shirt. I remember on the invite that it told me to wear something red, so I picked out my favorite shirt with swirling red and orange colors. It reminded me of a flame, which was why I loved it.

The other girls were wearing different colors. One was wearing green, one yellow, and one blue. I wondered what the colors meant as a man rounded the corner.

Welcome, and thanks for coming. He greeted us with what seemed like forced kindness, which only made me nervous.

I remember him well, this man. He had short brown hair and had a tall, lean, athletic figure. He would have been thought of as a hotty if it wasnt for this uneasy feeling that I got from him.

I watched as he scanned each of our faces and greeted each of us separately. Heather, He nodded at the girl in green. Kathy, This one was in blue. Alicia, He smiled at the girl in yellow. Then he came to me. And Melanie, He held my gaze and the uneasiness inside me made my stomach turn.

An old beat up truck rumbled to a stop next to the warehouse. Another man stepped out of the truck and joined our host. I recognized him as Billy, a friend of my fathers and felt my unease release a bit.

Welcome to my treasure hunt. Each of you have been assigned a certain element. Heather, you have Earth. Kathy, you have Water. Alicia is Air and Melanie is Fire.

I watched each of their faces as the element was assigned to them. There was some form of recognition on their faces as the element assigned to them was spoken. I wondered if they had the same connection to their element as I had with mine.

Part 3: Mysterious Treasure Hunt

We were all given maps and a list of items to find. The items seemed simple enough to find and I was getting bored already.

I wandered the path assigned to me and heard the truck starting somewhere behind me. I yawned and kicked at the dead leaves beneath my feet. Why did I even come?

I looked at the map and found that each trail did a complete circle, starting at the warehouse and ending at the warehouse. But each of them were a different size. Mine seemed to be the longest. Alicias was the shortest.

What kind of treasure hunt is this? I spoke aloud. The dead leaves crunched in response beneath my feet. I sighed and turned over the map. The list had disappeared and I stood still, staring at it.

I glanced around me to see if I could see or hear anyone else. But it was silent. I looked back down at the paper and turned it back over. The map was still there and I tried to figure out where I was.

I was half way through my little circle so I sluggishly kept walking. The unease in my stomach returning, full strength.

This really isnt a treasure hunt. Somethings wrong. The same thoughts kept running through my mind as I walked. I have to get out of here.

A few minutes later, I heard the truck come up behind me. I jumped out of the way before it could run me over.

Billy! Watch where youre going! I yelled as he pulled down the window.

Get in. His face was serious and I sensed fear behind his tone. I got in without arguing.

Part 4: Terrifying Realization

The truck tore through the dead grass and I quickly fastened my seat belt for reassurance. I looked over at Billy and saw tears behind his eyes. He was fighting to keep them from falling.

Suddenly, images found there way to my conscious and I was soon lost in them:

Billy leaned against the edge of the warehouse, staring out into the field. Alicia was approaching.

Here comes one of them now. He reported absently.

Their host looked up and smiled. Ah, Alicia. Good timing. He turned, tell her to come inside for the prize. He told Billy before disappearing inside the warehouse.

Alicia uneasily approached Billy. Have fun? Billy smiled and joked. I smiled as I saw this. Billy was always a fun person. He could always make a bleak situation interesting.

Alicia shrugged. Kinda boring, if you ask me. There was no challenge.

Yea this whole thing seemed lame to me. Billy responded then motioned inside. Alicia wandered inside and Billy leaned against the wall again.

A few minutes passed and Billy heard a muffled scream from inside. He rushed in to find their host holding a dead Alicia in his arms.

I inhaled quickly as the flow of images stopped abruptly. I turned my head and stared for a moment at Billy.

Billy? I asked hesitantly. He didnt answer, he just stepped on the gas and the truck lurched forward. I grabbed the dash to keep myself from hitting it. You couldnt have helped her! You didnt know! I found myself saying.

Suddenly the truck stopped and I was thrown back into my seat. Billys knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel.

Billy, what were you doing there? I asked slowly. He started driving again, but at a steadier pace.

He asked me to help out. I met him at a bar a couple days ago. He seemed like an okay guy. He responded slowly. His voice was strained. He said something about having an elemental treasure hunt. I had no idea what he was talking about but agreed to help out anyways.

I sank into my seat as I processed this information. Elemental treasure hunt. Each of us had an element. Each of us were connected to the element. We were the treasure. This last thought hit me hard and I gasped.

Billy looked sharply at me then back at the road. What?

Each of us had an element, and each of us were connected to that element. I repeated my thoughts to him and he looked confused for a moment then nodded. We were the treasure that he hunted. I finished quietly.

Billy was quiet for a moment. So you mean, he only wanted you girls. He questioned carefully.

I nodded. Yes, because of our connection with our element. Alicia was Air.

And you are?

Fire. I stared out the window as we both went silent. Four elements. Each connected to one person. Each person able to connect and control that element. If one person were to get each element...... My thoughts trailed off as I stared out the window. Then it hit me. Will he come looking for me?

Billy? Do you think that there are more people out there that are like me? Connected like I am. I asked him absently. I knew he was useless.

He just shook his head. I dont know.

I swallowed uneasily as my stomach turned. I may had escaped... but for how long? He was going to come look for me. He knew who I was. He knew where to find me. And he knew what he wanted. He wanted me. He wanted my ability to connect with fire.

What do I do now?
