In the Darkness: Prologue

The castle that stood five stories high was made of the finest, purest white stone. The sun shone brightly off the building that it was almost impossible to look at it directly. The first story looked about ten feet high. Large marble stairs led up to the large double doors that were made of the same white stone as the walls that surrounded it. The only differences were the large, crystallized windows and the black stone shards that littered them.

Two large men stood on both sides of the doors. They wore shiny black armor and a large sword attached to a sheath at their waists.

A girl walked up the stairs, her thin silk skirt flowing around her legs as she walked. She wore all black. Understandable, since she was just arriving home. The people she went to see favored black. Otherwise she usually wore soft, bright colors. Today, she wore a tight black corset with the black skirt. Over her shoulders she wore a soft cotton cape. She had pulled the hood up to hide her face as she returned home. Unwanted attention was something she wasnt looking forward to. All she wanted was her bed.

Standing out sharply against her surroundings, the 17 year old walked briskly towards the guards. She saw them reach for the hilts of their swords and stopped immediately at the top of the stairs. Lowering the hood, she met their gazes calmly with her dark eyes and they immediately bowed their heads.

Thats quite enough, guys. She gave them a tired smile and they returned the gesture. They asked her how her trip was, and she responded in light conversation. After a couple more Welcome Homes, the guards pulled open the doors and she stepped inside.

A deep burgundy carpet ran from the entrance and up the marble staircase, which split into two single stairwells, one going off in each direction. A couple more guards were positioned inside. They greeted her as she made her way across the foyer and into the grand hall, her shoes making light clicking noises on the polished floor. She hesitated only a moment before she turned and walked through another set of doors. An old chef frowned at her recklessness as she weaved in and out of the kitchens staff. Reaching another door, she pushed it open and found herself outside, yet again. She stood in a small patio meant for the staff in the kitchen. She paused and was immediately sent back into the future. She remembered sneaking to this very spot when she was a child. Two soft knocks on the door would reward her with a freshly baked cookie.

She smiled to herself at the memory as she turned and pushed open small wooden door that led into the garden.

A small delicate table was set up on the stone landing. An overlarge umbrella was perched over the table, giving the woman sitting under it a comfortable shade. The woman sat with her back to the door. Her brown hair was shot through with gray and met the lavender material at her shoulders.

The girl walked over and stooped down to kiss her mother on the cheek. The woman jumped slightly and her head snapped up then her body relaxed as she smiled and stood.

Selene, my darling daughter. She took Selene in her arms and kissed both of her cheeks. Ive missed you.

Selene sat down by her mother and the maid hovering nearby quickly came over to pour her some tea. She thanked her and she faded into the background.

How is life on Earth? Her mother asked.

Selene shifted uncomfortably. Her constant trips to Earth bothered her mother. She had to beg for months before she let her go the first time. Her mother enjoyed their secluded life on the moon. Things are fine. She answered slowly.

Anything interesting happen?

Selene felt uneasy. She felt like her mother was keeping something from her, but no matter how hard she tried, she could never manage to find out what it was. Instead of worrying about it, she just shook her head.

I see. They both became silent. The only sound was the slow sipping noise they made when they drank their tea.

You must be tired. Her mother said, breaking the silence.

Selene got the hint. She stood up and bowed her head. Yes, Mother. I think Ill retire to my room.
