Public Policy Issue Paper Outline


The written public policy issue paper is due on
April 27, 2005. All papers must be turned in during class. Papers turned in after class- will lose 25% of the written grade and 5% for every day after that. The paper and presentation will count as the final exam grade. Students who fail to turn in any paper will not pass the course.

                             Your name,
                             Teacher's name
                             Date.

Chapter 1 - Introduction: Include the following in you introduction:
                   Background and/or history of the issue with at least two specific examples that indicate that it is a
                     controversial issue in today's society. Include any facts and statistics relating to the issue. Credit
                       sources. (work cited) 2-3 pages

Chapter 2- Option A - the first possible solution or answer to the issue questions
                                  The option must include the following:
                                 - Information from your research - quote author and credit sources.
                                 - Information from you expert interview (i.e. as Mrs. X, head of the organization, stated,
                                    "I think "
                                 -Information from your lay person interview (what the "man in the street" thinks)
                                 - Results from you public opinion poll broken down by demographic factors - age,
                                            gender, ethnic group, etc. and displayed in a graph/chart with explanation.
                                 - Benefits (advantages) - an analysis of above information to determine the advantages of
                                    this option. You must discuss at least two benefits of the option: political, economic or
                                     social.
                                 - Costs (disadvantages)- an analysis of the above information to determine 
                                   disadvantages. You must discuss at least two costs for each option: political, economic
                                    or social.

Chapter 3 - Option B - will include all of the above

Chapter 4 - Option C - will include all of the above

Chapter 5 - Conclusion - based on your informed judgment, including analysis of the
                                     above information, what option you support and why.

Letter - Include a copy of a letter or proof of contact with someone in position to implement or initiate policy. (Other Activities may be completed with prior approval).
