There are 9 areas of mastery required of each individual band member. These areas represent the various skills that will enhance an individual’s overall musicianship and are strongly aligned with the state and county music education curricular expectations.

Perform a chromatic scale, one octave on any starting note, @ q =90, with as the rhythm.

 

Perform the following scales, one octave, @ q =90, in any rhythmic and articulation pattern: C-F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db major, as well as g and c minor.

 

Perform three major scales that are chromatically adjacent, one octave with arpeggio, for example, Bb concert-B concert-C concert

 

Perform without error one exercise from 40 Rhythmical Studies, to be selected from #3-7.

 

WW: Perform 2 sets of arpeggios (Bb-Eb Concert) from page 48 in Foundations for Superior Performance, @ q =90, with as the rhythm, any articulation pattern

Brass: perform 3 lip slurs from Warm-up Set #1 or #2, in Foundations for Superior Performance @ q =90.

Percussion: Perform the following Exercises in Foundations for Superior Performance: Page 50. Pattern 1, Page 51 Pattern 2, page 54 Option 1,and page 56 Option 1 @ q =80

 

Perform the Mini scale and Scale Patterns from 2 of the following concert keys: C-F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db major, @ q =90, in articulation pattern #1

 

Perform from memory the music for the marching show with attention to accuracy and musical detail. Must be completed during 1st 6 –weeks. Cannot be waived.

 

Pass a reading comprehension test on a musical topic as well as a test of musical terms with a grade of 80% or higher.

 

Complete the District Honor Band Audition and get selected for the ensemble. OR Participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival (either in a solo or an ensemble) and earn an Excellent rating or higher. OR Perform a Solo at one of our Concerts (Band or Jazz Band). OR Perform a complete solo from the standard repertoire for your instrument, as assigned by Dr. Poor.

Most of the practice necessary to complete these requirements can be done in the band class. The amount of practice will vary from individual-to-individual based on their level of musical skill. On average, most students will need 20-30 minutes a day of quality practice time outside of class to earn an A in this class, which is a relatively small amount of homework time compared to other classes. For some requirements (#2,. 3, 4, 5, 6,) half-credit can be earned by competing half or greater of the requirement. In addition, Dr. Poor will be available for tutoring, assistance, and coaching on designated days after school, which will be announced in class at the beginning of each week. If you want help, please report to the band room immediately after school on those days and/or make an appointment on another day to be mutually agreed upon. Students will have opportunities in class to compete these requirements on designated "Sign-Off" days, most often this will be Tuesday’s. THE STUDENT HAS THE ENTIRE TERM TO COMPLETE THESE REQUIREMENTS EXCEPT # 7 (Perform marching music) which must be completed prior to end of 1st 6 weeks.
