The year of '65: Amist the many Racial Equality marches lead by famous people like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X, the United States had finally intervened in the Vietnam War, which of course, angered the peaceful youth. Malcom X was later shot and killed in this year. Anti-war protests had begun and the term "hippie" was first used to describe the San Francisco counterculture. Apart from the protests, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan were climbing up the charts. Also, Ken Kesey introdced his Merry Pranksters to the Hell's Angels biker gang and turned them on to the famous Owsley-made-LSD. |

One Year Later, '66: Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin), Grateful Dead and such bands play at Bill Graham's Fillmore. It was this year that John Lennon said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. On November 5th was the Walk for Love and Peace and Freedom, with over 10,000 marchers in New York. |
