What is "Creative Evening Wear"?
Every pageant system has it's own category for elegance, style and glamour. In the Ohio Gay Pride system, the category is "Creative Evening Wear". There has been much talk surrounding what this category consists of. I am hoping this will clear up alot of the unanswered questions.

The bottom line is, there is no right or wrong answer when dealing with anything deemed "creative". Creativity is in the eye of the beholder. It is however, subject to opinion, your opinion, your designer's opinion, and of course the ultimate opinion of the judges. However this can be said of all categories within the pageant. After all, judge #1 may give high scores and kudos to a particular talent, while judge # 2 feels it falls short, or perhaps isn't moved in the same way. Creative Evening Wear is no different.

There are specific guidelines to follow however, as described in the contestant packet. I feel the key word in the description is "elegant". I also feel this is where sometimes contestants may have missed the mark. You can have a lovely design in mind, creaive and elegant on paper. But, if you attempt to have it made with $1.99 a yard velvet, you've just taken the elegance factor out. So it is imperative to think outside the box, but also keep in mind that the materials and the construction of a Creative Evening Wear plays a big part in the overall look. A unique pattern in your fabric does not constitute creativity. And, huge plastic stones from Hobby Lobby are a far cry from crystal rhinestones, and a paper hat covered in felt will ultimately do you in.

On that note, think about hats. canes, props, and back up's are all key in taking the category beyond "just evening gown". Keep in mind that big huge hats and props that hide your face and over power the creative evening wear itself, can hinder rather than help. It may also cause your overall look to be too costumey which in turn takes away from the elegance of the overall look. Let the base of the garment be your look and focal point. Remember elgeant is the key factor in Creative Evening Wear. I sincerely hope this helps potential contestants in the future. Feel free to contact myself or any one of the Miss Ohio Gay pride famil for any additional information.
