Warning
about the Inherent Dangers of Baseball
The NFHS Board of Directors addressed the baseball
bat issue at it's January 5-6, 2000 meeting in San
Francisco. It has adopted a baseball bat rule with
new size and weight specifications. Such bats will
be required for use during the 2001 season, but they
are legal immediately. The Board is still interested
in the the possibility of incorporating exit ball
speed and moment of inertia/balance point factors
as part of the baseball bat rule, and has directed
the rules committee to continue it's consideration
of these issues.
Student athletes and parents should be aware that
baseball, like all sports, will always have inherent
dangers. Although rare, death or catastrophic injury
can result from batted balls, and care should be taken
by all concerned to minimize such dangers through
the use of appropriate equipment, proper training
methods and common sense.
The NFHS encourages student athletes in all sports,
and their parents, to discuss risks and risk minimization
with coaches, school administrators and state high
school association officials.
