This page is dedicated to Phebe -- the wife of David Dean (1763-1838)
Its primary goal is to identify the parents of Phebe, my gggg-grandmother.

Is Phoebe's Maiden name SWEEZEY or BORLAND?

Since 1930, the only reference to Phoebe's maiden name came from D.A.R. records. The D.A.R. got her name from the applications of Mrs. Helen Cunningham Barron #261727 and Narcia Harriet Dubuar #261728 (both descendants of David & Phebe's oldest son - Gabriel DEAN). These two women applied at the same time and were both approved Apr. 11, 1930, their applications are almost identical and I am guessing that they filled them out together; they used the spelling - 'Phoebe SWEEZEY'. However, none of the references they site actually state Phoebe's maiden name.

In 1997 I noticed the following reference to the marriage of David DAINS to Phebe BORLAND:

[film #1310908: 1st Presbyterian Church, Goshen marriage records 1776-1804 and 1817-1839]
This Phebe, a daughter of William Borland and Tabitha McNeil, was born in Orange County, New York on March 6, 1765. At the time of this marriage David Dean would have been 21 years and 250 days old and Phebe Borland was 19 years 275 days of age. Unfortunately, without further information, there is insufficient evidence to prove that this is our David Dean and wife Phebe.

Family Record found in the family Bible of Wm. W. Dean, a grandson of Phebe and David Dean.
--This is the first family document that I am aware of that states Phebe's name as Borland.

Phebe BORLAND m. David DAINS 6 Dec. 1784 at the first Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange Co., NY - this makes more sense now and seems very likely to be our David & Phebe.

Phebe's father, William Borland, died before Phebe was married. His will:

I leave to my three sons, Thomas, Charles, and William, all my lands where I now live and all my lands in Ulster or Orange County or elsewhere. I leave to my wife Tabitha the use of one-third of my farm where I live during her life; Also two cows, six sheep, a good riding horse, with side saddle and bridle, one bed, with proper furniture, two pots, six chairs, a pair of tongs and fire shovel, etc., and as much room and privilege in my dwelling house as may be needful for her use, and a privilege in my barn. And if at any time my wife shall choose to dwell by herself, I do order my three sons to repair the small stone house standing near my present dwelling house in a comfortable and decent manner for her to dwell in. I leave to my son John £130, over and above £70 which he has already received from my son Thomas. I leave to my daughter, Mary Bradner, £200. To my daughter, Jean Armstrong, £200. I leave to my daughters, Rebecca, Isabel, and Phebe, house room in my dwelling house until they are married. I leave to my son William my Large Bible and my silver shoe buckles. And I order him kept to school, at the expense of my sons, Thomas and Charles, so long as to write a tolerable good hand and cypher through the Rule of Three. All the rest of my movable estate I leave to my sons, Thomas, Charles, and William, and to my daughters, Rebecca, Isabel, and Phebe. My son William is to be put to a trade. I make my wife and my sons, Thomas and Charles, executors."

The Town of Wallkill, has at times been in Orange County and at other times it has been in Ulster County. Phebe Borland's mother Tabitha was said to have born and died in Wallkill]

In 1809 Phebe Borland's mother, widow Tabitha Borland, wrote a will. She died 28 June 1815 at Wallkill, Orange Co., NY and is buried at Phillipsburg Cemetery, Phillipsburg, Orange Co., NY. Her will abstract reads:--- Need to see if the actual will specifies the name or residence of her daughter Phebe

From the above references, I would expect that Phebe died between 1830-1832 while the family was in the Monroe County area of NY.

The name 'Sweezy' may have been the middle name of Phebe's second son, David S. Dean. Perhaps he was named for his uncle David Swezy (husband of Phebe's sister Abigail) or he could have been named for the David Swezy that David Dean served under during the Revolutionary War.

David and Phebe also had a son William B. Dean. What was his middle name? Could he have been named after his uncle and his grandfather - William Borland. They also had at least 3 grandchildren named William B. Dean. Could the 'B' stand for Borland? A marriage record of one of these Williams states his name as "William Borland Dean".

David and Phebe's children also had an uncle Bradner (John Bradner who married Phebe's sister Mary in 1754). David's oldest son, Gabriel, would marry Lydia Bradner. The Bradner family was with the Dean and Borland family in Orange Co., New York and also in Ontario/Wayne/Orleans Co. and then moved with them to Livonia, Wayne Co., MI in the 1830's.

There are many variant spellings for this surname. It is likely that it derives from John SWEAZEA who emigrated to Salem, Mass. John and son John Jr. being Quakers left Salem and went to Southold on Long Island, Suffolk Co., NY. John Sr.'s son Joseph remained in Mass. and spelled his name 'SWASEY', while John Jr. used 'SWAYZE'. And there are various spellings of this name over later generations, but most branches appear to trace back to these two brothers.

David Sweezey came to Marion in 1795 with his family from New Jersey, making the trip by boat. He settled a large farm in the southern part of the town. Part of this farm is still in the family, being owned by Lucian Sweezey. The first recorded meeting, April 2, 1799, of the old town of Sodus, which then included what now comprises seven towns, chose David Sweezey as collector and constable. David Sweezey was buried in the old family burying ground which was on the hill back of the school house just north of Lucian Sweezey's land.

MARION I -- David Sweezey and family came from New Jersey. They had voyaged the entire distance in light boats, which, at the few portages, were carried from stream to stream. Sweezey took up a large farm in the south part of the town, and resided upon it until his demise. It was in possession of heirs for some time, and then, after changing owners many times rested in the hands of D. F. Luce.

MARION - was formed from Williamson, as "Winchester", April 18, 1825. Its name was changed April 15, 1826. It is an interior town, lying W. of the center of the co. Its surface is broken by sandy hills and gravelly ridges; the Niagara limestone crops out in the N. part. It is drained by East Red Creek, which flows S. into Mud Creek. The soil is a gravelly, calcareous loam, and drift. Limestone is quarried in the N. part, for building purposes and public works. Near Marion Village is a sulphur spring. Marion, (p.v.) in the S. part, contains 4 churches, the Marion Collegiate Institute, a furnace and machine shop, a fanning mill factory, and 390 inhabitants. The first settlement was commenced in 1796, by Daniel Lovell.(1) The first church (Presb.) was organized Nov. 1, 1808.(2)
