RE-UNION OF THE RICHARD PEED I, FAMILY
[Note: this reunion speech had been in the possession of Bessie Parry Peed (d/o Joseph Duncan PEED/Mary Eloise PARRY) of Mays Lick, Mason Co., KY (she had attended that reunion) and it was passed down to her daughter Mary Yancey Claybrook. Thanks to Sue Moore for sending me a copy.]

"I looked up the meaning of 're-union' and found it meant 'union after separation'. We have been separated and have this day come to enjoy the fellowship of our family one with the other. Family re-unions mean a great deal to many of us and ours is a big one.  When asked to right a little history of the Peed family, it was a pleasure to do it. It is not accurate but as nearly so as we could get it. If I leave any member of the family out, it is an error of the head and not of the heart.  If any corrections are to be made, kindly do so, that the younger generation may have a good record.

Richard Peed I, was born in Virginia in 1768.  He was the son of John Peed and Margaret Green Peed. He was married to Hannah Griffin. Little is known of them except he was sheriff of Westmorland County, Virginia, during the Revolutionary War. They moved to Mason County, Kentucky, date unknown. They were parents of: James Peed, Leroy Peed, William Peed, Richard Peed II, Margaret, Dully, Elizabeth, and Jane Peed.

James Peed grew to manhood in Mason County, Kentucky, and married Caroline Calvert in 1819. His father being a slave owner, gave each of his children slaves as they left to make homes of their own.

The children of this couple were: Julia Ann Peed Shroyer, James Calvert Peed, Alsey Peed Evers, Hannah Ann Peed Boyd, Elizabeth Peed Bland, Richard Peed III, and three children who died in infancy.

James Peed sold his slaves back to his father and came to Indiana, where he bought a farm in Libert[y] Township, near Devon Post Office, on Dublin Pike. Caroline Calvert Peed died and left an infant Redmond.  In 1839, James Peed and Elizabeth Elliott Hobson were married. She took a mother's place to this baby, and was a good mother in word and deed. Their children were: Caroline Peed Paul, Evan Hobson Peed, and Harriet Peed Johnson. When James Peed and Elizabeth were married, she had three children. Into this family were three sets of children and harmony and happiness prevailed with the guiding hands of such strong characters as James and Elizabeth Peed.

James Peed had true southern hospitality. His home was the happy meeting place for his family. He, of the brothers, came first to [Indiana]. Liking his new home so well, he sent for his brother Richard II, and William to come and settle there. Leroy died in Kentucky but his widow, Harriet, came to his home and stayed in Henry County, Indiana.

Anna Peed Redding, being their daughter. William Peed was the grandfather of William Peed Junior, Mrs. Jap Wright, and Mrs. Howard Maury, Amanda, and Elliott Peed.

Richard Peed II was the grandfather of Gertrude, Florence, Ed Peed, Carl Berry and the Fletcher boys.

Dully Peed Hixon, the sister was the grandmother of Mrs. Dave Millikan, and Mrs. Will Ross.  James Peed died in 1860, and Elizabeth Peed died in 1895.

Two of James Peed's children are here today, Evan H. Peed and Helen Peed Johnson, and many grandchildren and into the second and third generations.

The family of Richard Peed III, should be given the credit for this re-union fir it started with that family. Leroy, Ella, Neal, Dora, and they have included in this, the family of Richard Peed I, and there is now a Richard IV bringing down the name from 1768 to 1925.

This is a letter I have in my possession from Gertrude PEED [daughter of Leroy PEED] to my maternal grandmother, Lillian (MILLS) DEAN [daughter of Gertrude's cousin Effie (BERRY) MILLS
"May 2, 1937
Lillian Elizabeth Dean
Torrance, California Box 208
My Dear Cousin-
We have been a long time in answering your letter as we have been trying to run down some information. While of course we know the family better than you do, still we are very shy of dates. My grandfather's name was Richard Peed. Hee came from Mason County, Kentucky to Indiana in 1832 [c.1852/5]. Hee had a brother James who was already here, also another brother in Kentucky whose name I do not know. Hee owned a Plantation in Kentucky and had some slaves, I do not know how many. Hee sold the farm, some of the slaves and gave one to a neighbor to keep as she was old and had been raised on his place. Hee wanted her taken care of the rest of her life so gave this neighbor a horse to relay [repay?] him. There was always a love of horses in the whole Peed family so you see what the gift meant to him.
My grandmother [America Clift], my grandfather's sister - Aunt Jane (whom your Uncle Dick said he would rather have seen than anything he could think of) and the children - My father Leroy age 10, your grandmother [Mary Elizabeth Peed] age 8, Aunt Laura-6 came on the train to Cambridge City. Aunt Jen was born in Indiana. My grandfather, Uncle Tom, Al & Will, all children of a former marriage drove through and brought the furniture and stock. Esther led or rode a number of horses. Thus had to come at a certain time of year as they had to ford the Ohio. They were only here a few days before he bought what is now known as the Doddridg[e] farm, 160 acres on Flat Rock considered a splendid farm even now. A short time afterwards he bought the Thornton farm of 200 acres. We have that deed. My father bought 80 adjoining acres and at one time all of that was tended by the family. At his death, the Doddridg[e] farm was sold and they lived at the Thornton Place where we were all born, even your mother [Effie Mae Berry]. The house still stands but is much changed. As you are interested, I wish you could see it some time - the home is sly. I know nothing about and very little of the family history back there. There is a small station given on a road map called Peeds. There is an old cemetery at Washington, KY that Horace said gave him lots of information.
The first I ever heard of was that 3 brothers came from England and bought thousands of acres of land in Southern Virginia. One of these men had been a horticulturist to the King. Hee is our ancestor and accounts for the farming strain in the family. They kept this big plantation with three large houses and a number of slave quarters until the civil war when the houses were burned and everything was lost. Without the slaves they could not tend to farm, with out much money much of the land went back to the government. There are still many there of the Peed family. Long before this, 4 brothers had crossed over to KY and raised their families and of course there is where ours come from. There are Peeds in Western Ind. and also Southern Ind. who trace back to these other brothers.
The name Peed means Pine Tree. We had no relatives in the Rev. war. One man was a sherriff. As far as I know, we had no relatives in the Civil War. You see they were really Southern sympathizers but living in the north, so were a little too loyal to go to war. They seem to have been a peacefull lot, going back to there moving to Indiana. My grandmother [America Clift] and Aunt Jane had never done a days work, always depending on slaves. They came to Indiana a new country and while they lived in a good house, never-the-less it was pioneer life. The name Aunt Jane has been handed down through all the years as a wonderful woman. She seems to have been a manager. My grandmother [America] was a little woman not very strong and so the sister-in-law took the lead. All the family have had that love of farm and horses. The family here controlled the County Fair as long as fairs were in style. They also had a hand in the State Fair as long as the older generation was living. There is something about the clear music, the noises of stock, the peculiar smells of a fair ground that is still attractive to the writer although I much prefer a car to a horse. We love to go to the State Fair although we do not care for racing.
Now I think this is more family history than it is information as I know no dates or names. I believe we are on the track now to get some facts so if we do we will send them to you. We had been so long in answering I thought I would not wait longer. Hoping this finds everyone well and happy. We are in the midst of house cleaning - an Indiana necessity.
With Love,
Gertrude Peed     1217 Lincoln Ave., New Castle, Ind.
P.S. My Grandmother's name was America Clift"
