Dorcas H. DOWELL [d/o George Sipes DOWELL & Jeanette
McCOY]
b. 1848 Probaly Breckinridge Co., KY [Since her father
appears to have moved from KY to IL about 1849, Dorcas was probably born
in KY and most likely in Breckinridge County. The 1860 census says she was
then 12 and born in KY. However, 1870 census says she was born in IL and
age 22. Her date of birth is based on her daughter Alice's family bible which
says that Dorcas died. 25 Feb 1881 aged 32 yrs, 6 [or 10?] mos, 15 days--if
that age is correct her date of birth would be 10 Aug
1848.]

*After comparing words that the census taker has written which I can read I am sure that what looks like an "s" is more likely an "e". George DOWSIL is really George DOWELL the "i" being a small "l". It is more conclusive on the top of the second page for Wm. R. Dowell which looks like "Wm. R. Dowsll".

Name: George Sipes DOWELL Birth: abt 1817 Breckinridge Co., KY Death: aft 1887 probably in Jasper Co., IL1 Father: Littleberry DOWELL (1796-1873) Mother: Rachael SIPES (~1796-~1817) Other spouses: Barbara PHILLIPS Misc. Notes: George's birth is often sited as 17 Jan 1821.2 And his mother's death is often sited as 1817.3 Census and newspaper records that I have found so far estimate George's birth closer to 1817 [33 in 1850 = b.c.18174; 42 in 1860 = b.c.18185; 53 in 1870 = b.c.18176; 70 in 1888 = b.c.18187]. If he really was born in 1821, then he was only 15 years old in 1836 when he married then 21 year old Jeanett McCoy. It seems more likely that he was born about 1817, we will have to wait and see what primary sources arise. He settled in Jasper County about 1849, buying land from the Federal Government in Nov. 1850 and again in 1853.7, 8 His brother Riley may have also purchased land at the same time but apparently never moved from KY or went right back to Breckinridge Co., KY.8 George is not listed in the probate index for Jasper Co., IL. Did he die there intestate or did he move out of the County and die elsewhere?
Marriage: 10 Mar 1836 Breckinridge Co., KY2 Misc. Notes: 34 on 1850 census = b.c.18164; 44 on 1860 census = b.c.18165; 53 on 1870 census = b.c.18176 Jeanette's mother died when Jeanette was about 8 or 9 years old. After which she was raised by her stepmother, Dorcas Hadley.
