4th At Goshen as aforesaid, he was often called out in the Militia, and was
once sent to Hurley for Provisions for the army and was out sixteen days;

Thurston was killed; this was in 1779. He verily believes that he was in
actual service more than eighteen months, but from the infirmities of age,
and the privations that he has born, he is unable to state with precission
many services done and performed by him. He only claims from the Country,
compensation for fourteen months in all. He was born in Little Britain in
Orange County and State of New York on the [31] day of March 1763. Has no

In the matter of David Dean's application for a Pension
Personally appered before me the undersigned, a justice of the Peace in and
for said county, David Dean, who, being duly sworn deposeth and saith, that
the reason he did not have a clergy man to support his original application
before the Court of said County on the 27 day of August 1832, was, the society
to which he belongs is without a settled minister, and knew of none that
he could conveniently procure. He is required to answer the interogatories
prescribed by the War department-The 4 first of them he has answered in his
original declaration - the the 5th interrogatory he now says - under the
service stated under his first head, that Colonel Hawthorns Regiment was
at Ramappo at the same time - but under the 2nd head there was no other troops
on duty besides the Company to which he belonged. And under the 3rd head
he now says that the company to which he belonged was stationed most of the
time at the "Gap" near West Pont, and he cannot state the names of any other
Regiments there on that station - Under the 4th head he says that his service
was almost always on fatigue and guarding the goal at Goshen - He is required
to set forth his service in detail - under the first head he served four
months - under the second head three months - under the third head three
months and sixteen days - and in all not less than fourteen months and sixteen

It is important in all cases to determine with precision the period for which
the applicant served, and the particular rank he held, as the law directs
the pension to be paid according to the grade of the pensioner and the length
of his service. The use of the phrase about three or four months is too
indefinite, and all such qualifying expressions are
objectionable.
QUERE XIV. Proof of Service
In a case where the name of the applicant is not found on the records of
the Department, he must prove his service by two credible witnesses, who
are required to set forth in their affidavits the time of the claimants entering
the service, and the time and manner of his leaving the same, as well as
the regiment, company, and line to which he belonged. The magistrate who
may administer the oaths must certify to the credibility of the witnesses,
and the official character and signature of the magistrate must be certified
by the proper officer, under the seal of office.
QUERE XVI. Mode of authenticating papers.
In every instance where the certificate of the certifying officer who
authenticated the papers is not written on the same sheet of paper which
contains the affidavit, or other paper authenticated, the certificate must
be attached thereto by a piece of tape or narrow ribbon, the end of which
must pass under the seal of office of the certifying off........to prevent
any paper from .... properly attached to the certificate.
