Orange and Ulster County New York
I am searching for any information on all Dean(e)/Deen/Dain(s)/etc. family in early Orange and Ulster County
in an effort to prove that any of them are or are not related to our David Dean.

Contrary to some people's belief that David just appeared out of the ether--I feel it is highly likely that his father was living nearby
and that it is VERY LIKELY that his mother was also present at the time of David's birth.

David said in his pension application that he was born in Little Britain, Orange Co., NY.
He probably had siblings who lived locally for at least some time. So far, wills and family histories of other local Dean
family do not mention a David Dean of the right age. Did his family go unrecorded or did they move out of the county?
I will continue to add information regarding Orange/Ulster County Deans on my NY records page.

Family Record transcript found in family Bible of William Warren Dean (1836-1894) [William was a son of David S. Dean and Catharine Munro, and grandson of David Dean and Phebe Borland.

This Family Record is transcribed on a letterhead of "Dean & Carroll" purveyors of home furnishings (wall paper, etc) in Memphis, TN. I believe it was transcribed by William's brother Luther M. Dean (1833-1904) Luther was the business partner of Henry A. Carroll and must have had either his grandparents (David and Phebe Dean) Bible or a transcript of their Bible with him in the 1880's when he made this copy he sent to his brother William in California.

District No. 2 included a section of the present town of Warwick extending north and south from below Florida at some point to Amity, taking in also the Bellvale neighborhood and the settlements in the vicinity of what is now New Milford and the village of Warwick.

I have a John Dean that was born in 1801 in Orange, NY and was married to Hulda Skinner. They both died in Port Burwell, Ontario. Do you see any connection with the Dean's you have in Port Burwell?

I have a Clarissa Ann Dean who was born 2-10-1827 maybe in NY or Ontario, who married a Martin L. Hicks, she died 2-12-1881 in Mindoro, WI. I saw your reference to WI and thought maybe we may have a connection. Clarissa is the daughter of John Dean born 1801 in Orange, NY and Hulda Skinner also born in Orange, NY but died in Ontario.

He migrated to Washington Co., Virginia, Henderson Co., Kentucky, Edwards Co., Illinois and finally to Searcy County, Arkansas where he died 10-9-1853. He is buried in the Horn Cemetery in Searcy County and I have a picture of his tombstone. It is of natural stone, large slabs of limestone, and the dates are handcarved. A lot of people think that he is descended from the Jonathan Dean, Sr. and Jedediah Dean but I'm not sure that anyone can prove it. I will help you all that I can with these Dean children...."

Hi-- This is my first posting...does anyone have any connections to Julia Ann Dains, b. 1793, who married Henry Grannis(s) between 1813 and 1814 in Goshen, Orange County, NY? I have lots of information on the Grannis side, but none on Dains at all! I would love to exchange information if you are interested!
Thanks--

Julia Ann Dains "Tara, I just checked the IGI online and got the following information: Julia Ann Dains born 1793 in Goshen, Orange, New York film number 1760882 married Harry or Henry Grannis about 1813 in Goshen, Orange, New York, film number 1760807. Just go to your local FHC and order those two films and see what additional information it lists. Then if you would please post it on the list so we can all satisfy our curiousity in this matter. What do you know about the Grannis line. I know nothing. It will be interesting to see how this Julia Ann Dains ties into the rest of the family" From: rick moran <[email protected]>

Nicholas DEAN; 1775 Assessment Roll, Dist 5 (Wickham's Pond, Bellvale Valley, etc.), p.567

District No. 5 is described as comprising the territory in the vicinity of Wickham's Pond, including Bellvale Valley. The boundaries between this and the other Warwick district are not very clear from this testimony, as Bellvale is thus mentioned in each; but the Bellvale neighborhood was of considerable extent, and may have been divided by the line of the assessment districts.

Clark, 1881, reprinted by Heart of the Lakes Publishing, Interlaken, NY, 1980. Ruttenber & Clark comments about the importance of the 1775 Assessment Roll as an early record of the country history especially given the destructive fire which consumed the town clerk's office in 1842.] http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyorange/assessment_01.htm

I have not had time to follow this any further. I will keep in touch ..judi
