Return to David Dean Project

List of Cemeteries with Dean family burials

Jan. 20, 2009

Hi Everybody,

A member of the John Sackett Chapter DAR has contacted me in regard to David Dean's headstone. Our Ancestor, David Dean, a veteran of the American Revolution, died 170 years ago this year and was buried in the Newburgh Cemetery, Livonia, Wayne County, Michigan. His headstone is broken, badly weathered and the old DAR plaque placed in 1930 is missing. They are looking to have a professional tombstone repair done (or a new stone carved?) and a new plaque placed. The costs have not been determined yet, but preserving it is very important. The John Sackett Chapter DAR has been in contact with the Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter DAR and hope that they will assist as well. David's grave is one of 4 in the cemetery that they are working towards marking/preserving. Depending on cost estimates, they would like to have something done by this fall if possible. They would hold a dedication ceremony and would welcome any and all descendants to attend.

The D.A.R. says that if you would like to make a tax deductable donation toward this repair, they can be made by check, and would be payable to: John Sackett Chapter, DAR. All donations made to the chapter for this project will receive a letter for tax purposes, tax deductible - a bonus. Donations can and should be earmarked to go specifically toward David Dean's grave by designating such on your check and in a letter sent with your donation. Please contact Brenda H. for information regarding donations or any other questions: [email protected]

I will post updates and further information on this page.

Your Cousin,
Troy

The Newburgh Cemetery Society was organized on November 23, 1832.
Among the first officers were:

Luther DEAN, President
William B. DEAN, Treasurer

Each lot measured 9 feet by 25 feet.  In 1848 the budget was short and money for fencing unavailable.  Builders of the fence, Luther Dean & Joseph Kingsley, were allowed interest on their bill of $61.251/2 until the debt was discharged.

The Sign on left reads:
"REGISTERED MICHIGAN HISTORIC SITE
NEWBURGH CEMETERY
An organization, later known as the Newburgh Union Cemetery Society, was formed on Nov. 23, 1832, to establish and maintain this cemetery, the first in the present city of Livonia. One grave, that of Salmon Kinglsey, a veteran of the American Revolution who died in 1827, already existed here. In the century that followed, three other Revolutionary War veterans, more than fifty Civil War veterans and other early residents were buried here in these grounds, a treasured reminder of the pioneer era."
