William and Lydia are in the 1910 census in Plymouth Twp, Wayne County, MI, pg 70
William is 81, Lydia is 72, they have been married 55yrs. occupation is listed as none for William. There is no one else living with them in this census.

The following is from the personal diary of William's son, Bennett Luther Dean, "Tuesday April 28 [1914] ....Father died today at 4 P.M. Clarence came up in his auto and told us. So father's 86 years of life is ended. What changes in the country and all things he has seen. Born in York State in 1828 he came with his father's family to Michigan in 1832 when the country was entirely new and crude. The family settled on a farm at Newberg. Woods were every where and Detroit was only a village. I have heard him tell of teaming to Detroit when he was a young man and the trouble with awful roads and conditions then. Indians were still in this country and I have heard him say that he had hunted with them. In 1852 he, with a party, teamed it to California over the plains and the journey took 3 months. He started on the steam cars as far as they went, which was not quite to Chicago, and at the end of the line they and their goods were thrown off in the woods. And that was as far as the rail roads went in those days, Chicago was only a few houses. He went to Sacramento, Cal. and I guess was there about 2 years and came back mostly by water, but I do not think he went around the horn. He married Lydia Joy [daughter of Bennett JOY & Sally WOOD] who was a York Stater too. He ran a grocery store at Wayne, Mich. where I was born in 1868 and when I was a year old he came back and as owner, run the Nankin Mills for 15 years. Then to Northville, Mich. for 3 years and on the Fisher Farm near Plymouth for 3 years. Then to Det. and back on a farm near South Lyons, then back to Det. and Northville again, and finally to Plymouth, 5 or 6 years ago. He was not a soldier and was a Democrat all his life. Was Justice of the Peace for many years at Nankin. Was a very good man, kind and loyal to his family. I do not think he ever joined a church but was a Free Mason and believed in a God. And today ends all of that life of 86 years. It seems strange and makes me feel strange and sad. Although he was so old and died of old age, it seems strange that the end must come sometime and to everyone. He has not been long sick and but a short week helpless. He has had spells for a year that forebode the end, but was not called upon to suffer very much or require much help or attention. He has enjoyed good health for many years and been able to care for himself. Mother still lives but is rather feeble. He has 4 living sons and one daughter, ranging in age from 41 to 56: Herbert, Ernest, Geo., Bennett and Edna. Two children were lost in their infancy."[5]

Edna was at work but Mother and Father were there and Mrs. Beard was there, she is keeping house for Edna and Anna McGee was calling there so she had quite a visit. Mother says Ernie and his wife and baby came to Northville just lately to show Mother the baby. Ernies wife has been at outs with Mother for 4 years and I never expected she would be the first to make up but I guess the baby had something to do with it. We hear they are very proud of the baby and want everybody to see it. They are both old to have the first baby. Ernie must be 45 and his wife cant be far behind. Well I am glad and hope they get good natured again. I would give two cents to see the baby and they say it is a beautiful baby girl. It must be about 10 months old now. 1.6.5 `Baby' DEAN [son of Bennett Luther Dean and Anna Louise Clarkson]
Birth: 30 May 1912, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI[5]
Death: 30 May 1912, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI[5]
Burial: Old Cemetery, Plymouth at grave of Victor D. Dean[5]

"Thursday May 30, 1912...Anna was taken sick with pain at 12 oclock....We did not know what to make of it, it was coming a month too soon. I got up and began to get things ready, it was so cold that I nearly shivered to death and Anna shook until the bed rattled. At 4 Anna could wait no longer so...I phoned the Dr. and my sister Edna and they both got here inside of an hour. The Dr....took Anna and I to the House of Providence in his Auto. The baby was born in 30 minutes after they got there but it was dead and had been dead for a day or two the Dr. said. Anna never saw the baby.... Saturday June 1...A day of days for me. I decided to take the little body to Plymouth and bury it on Father's lot in the Old Cemetery in Lower Village. I went to the Health board and got a blank, took that to the Doctor, he filled out his statement, then I had to fill one, then take it back to the Health officer and get a burying permit and shipping permit to take it to Plymouth, then to the Hospital to get the body, then the Car to Plymouth...too late to do anything that night so I went and stayed all night at Uncle Asa's....Sunday June 2...woke up at 3 A.M. at Uncle Asa's, Plymouth. And it was first getting dawn so I thought I would get up then and go to the cemetery. So I got up and went down stairs, got a spade and the box out of the telescope satchel. I had brought it from Detroit on the Car with me in this way. I went down through the lower village to the cemetery and found Fathers grave lot that he owned for over 50 years. He has one still born and one boy that lived about a year and it was his head stone I found, his name was Victor DeForest Dean, died Dec. 11, 1858 and the lot has not been disturbed since. About 6 feet in the rear of the stone I dug a grave just about 3 feet deep and put the box down into it. I was not sure but I thought the head was to the west and Victors stone. Then I filled it in and made a nice mound with new clean earth, then got a couple of bunches of bridal wreath blossoms and placed them on the grave and then came away. It was between 3:50 and 4:30 A.M. I saw not a living soul while there and the hoot owls were hooting in the near by trees and birds were singing and I felt strange indeed. It was very warm, I removed my coat and hat and perspired freely while digging and just as I came away it began to sprinkle and was raining quite hard by the time I got back to Uncle Asa's. They got up and got me some breakfast and I took the 6 oclock car for home via Northville....I feel as though this was an epoch in my life. Although the little fellow was born dead I some way feel as tho I had a baby in the other world. When I got the body at the hospital I turned back the cloth it was wrapped in and saw its face. It did not look bad at all, it looked clean but the skin was turning black. I felt sure it was ours because it resembled the others, but more so because its left ear top was turned down against the ear which seems characteristic of them all and Anna too when she was born."[5]
