If you have any further information, corrections or additions, please let me know. I do not believe that I am related to this line of Dean family. Much of the following is from bits and pieces that Wilber Dean has sent me over the years and I have set up this webpage as a Dean query. You can also contact Wilber directly.

“PETER DEAN. Among the pioneer families of Livingston County none is better known throughout the community than the Deans, who came hither in 1837 when the subject of this sketch was a little boy of seven years. In consequence of his early removal to this vicinity this gentleman has taken almost as deep an interest in the affairs of the county as though he were native born, and the regard and esteem which is universally granted to the sturdy and honorable pioneers of the early days has come to him by inheritance.
The beautiful farm of one hundred and twenty acres which employs the energies of our subject is to be found on section 9, Howell Township. Peter Dean was born on the 19th of January, 1830, in Livingston County, N. Y. He is of Eastern parentage, his father, Joseph, being a native of New York, and his mother, Sarah Sigler, having been born in the Keystone State. Joseph Dean was a farmer by occupation and after coming to Michigan operated a farm in Brighton Township, Livingston County, until death ended his labor in 1842. His faithful and devoted wife survived him until 1863.
The paternal grandfather of our subject was Daniel Dean, who was a native of Wales. He was a boot and shoe maker by trade and came with his wife, Ann Van Horn, to Brighton, Mich., the year previous to his son's migration hither. He here carried on a farm until his death. Seven children formed his household, and his son Joseph had eight children, four of whom are now living, namely: Peter, Abraham W., Kensselaer, and Hannah J.
The boyhood of our subject was spent upon a farm and his school days found him attending the school of the village of Brighton. He lived at home until 1842, after which he worked at farming in this county. When he was thirty years old he purchased a piece of land comprising fifty acres and lived upon it one year in Shiawassee County, but he did not feel at home there and sold that property and returned to Howell Township, where he bought sixty-three acres, and somewhat later added to his estate by purchasing seventeen acres just across the road from his other property and upon this new purchase he now lives. In addition to this he has bought forty acres one-half mile south of his home. He carries a fine grade of stock, paying especial attention to fine horses and good sheep.
The first marriage of this gentleman united him with Miss Hannah Ackley, a daughter of Edwin Ackley of this county, and by this marriage there were two children, Bertin J., who has now married Miss Augusta Tobin, and lives upon a farm in this township, and Claude „B., who is still with his father. The mother of these sons departed life in 1886. By his present marriage he took to wife Mrs. Maggie Hodges of Clinton County, Mich., who had by her first marriage two children. Bertie and Eda. This lady is a daughter of Francis and Margaret (Bristol) Cardinal, natives of Montreal, Canada, who moved to New York many years ago. There Mr. Cardinal died and the widow came with her family to Clinton County, Mich., where she lived until death called her hence. Of her ten children four are now living, namely: Caroline, who is Mrs. Isaac Brown; Maggie, Mrs. Dean; Sarali. Mrs. Bradley, and Olive, Mrs. Bradley.
He of whom we write is a public-spirited man, who has ever taken an intelligent interest in the political movements of his adopted land, and has attached himself to the Republican party. He has never sought official position, but wields a strong influence among the men of his party and is looked upon as a leader of thought. The early experiences of his father's family in their first veal's in this State are full of incidents of interest, and he might recount many tales of hardship and deprivation. Upon their first coining here they were at one time destitute of everything in the eatable line except potatoes and they lived for an entire week upon baked potatoes without salt.”   [Portrait and Biographical Album of Ingham and Livingston Counties, pp. 614-617.[1]]

Obit of Mr. Peter Dean [unknown paper] [2] - ”An 1836 Pioneer of Livingston County Died  Sunday - The death of Peter Dean an aged and highly respected pioneer of Livingston county occurred at the home of his son Claude Dean in the Marr district Howell township, Sunday August 8, 1915 aged 87 years last January.  The funeral services Tuesday were largely attended.
Mr. Dean has lived in Livingston County since 1836 and is well and favorably known especially in Brighton, Deerfield and Howell where he has lived. He is known and highly respected for his even disposition, his genial ways and his good will towards all of his acquaintances.
Peter Dean was born in Sparta, Livingston county, New York January 19,1828. From there the family moved to Tonawanda N. Y. and in 1836 came to Michigan settling in Brighton township this county among the very first comers to the county. Since then his life has been spent in the county. He married to Hannah Ackley, November 11, 1863 and to this union three children were born two of whom remain Bart Dean of Fowlerville and Claude of Howell township as well as two grand children Mona and Gerald. Mrs. Dean died some years ago.” [This information is from Ben and Henry Howard 3790 E. Beard Rd. Morrice Michigan 48857-9732. And was told by my cousin Bill Vogt Jr. while at the library and Mona's daughter June was there also saying even though the Howard's are in their 90's they can resight Dean family geneolgy till the cows come home.] [2]

He was married to Hannah L. Ackely. Son  Bertin J. Dean 1865-1915, Willis D. Dean 1867-1868 and Claude B. Dean were thier children [Wilber Dean][2]

"...Claude Berdette Dean and Mary Kazia Mettles were our Grandparents, their only two children were Mona Ione Dean Sopp and Garald Mettles Dean. Claude had one brother Bert. Their father Peter Dean came to this area at 7 years old. His parents Daniel Dean was a native of wales and married Ann Van Horn of Brighton Township. They had 7 children. Peter's first Wife, Hannah Ackley was the father of Bert and Claude. But he eventually remarried Maggie Hodges of Clinton country. She had two Children Bertie and Eda.  I do have a list of all Daniel's children.  There is a Dean reunion at the Conway town hall the second Sunday in August that I have been attending. There are two brothers, Ben and Henry Howard, 3790 E Beard Rd., Morrice, MI 48857-9732 that may have lots of information. They are in their 90's but can recite Dean history until your brain is so full you wonder what happened. In the mean time I will write our reunion Secretary and see if she has any lists she can send me.

I spelled Mettles differently than Becky did, I am pretty sure this is the correct spelling. A lot of the family is buried at the Pioneer Cemetery on Burkhart road and Peter Dean and Hanna are buried on Owosso road, I have been to their grave sites.
If I can get any thing by the first week in June I will e mail you immediately. I would be interested in anything you might find out. I have to get after our miss Becky, she even misspelled my last name, what  am I going to do with her.
The family Becky mentioned in Gratiot county are not on the Dean side, they are on the Mettles side, they were my grandma's family.
I will send a note off immediately and see what I can get from Jeanette. If you want to be put on the list for the Dean reunion please let me know, sounds like you are relation somewhere down the line? Or did I misunderstand. Hope this is of some help and not too confusing.
I just read the paper again I have, as of August 12, 1973 Glenn Dean had the family bible. I don't believe he is alive now but I do believe he had a son. I will be glad to give you copies of anything I have or might be able to secure."

"Chester Dean. A traveler journeying along the highways of Conway Township, Livingston County, must be well pleased with the appearance of the farms which greet his eye. They are well fenced, neatly cultivated and richly productive, and with their handsome farm houses and substantial and attractive barns and outbuildings make up a beautiful picture of rural prosperity. These farms are and indication of the wealth and progress of the country, and among them we are pleased to mention that of Mr. Dean.
Our subject was born in 1856, in Genesee County, Mich., not more than two miles from Flint, and remained there through his infancy removing when two years old to Cohoctah Township, Livingston County. Thence the family returned to Genesee County and afterward made their home successively in Brighton and in Conway, both of which latter places are in this county, and finally settled upon the farm where Mr. Dean now resides.
Daniel Dean, the father of our subject, was born in 1824, in New York, and was twelve years old when he came to this State where he still resides. His wife, Lydia Curtis, was a native of the Empire State, where she was born in 1826...
The marriage of Chester Dean with Laura Rathburn which took place in 1887, resulted in the birth of one child, a daughter, Ada, who was born September 21, 1890. Mrs. Dean is a native of Conway Township, and was born November 8, 1866. Upon his farm Mr. Dean has one hundred and seventeen head of sheep and has an average sale of *515 worth of wool and sheep each year. Besides this flock he has sufficient stock to enable him to carry on general farming in the best and most progressive manner. His political views incline him to vote the Republican ticket, but he has leanings toward the cause of Prohibition which render him quite independent in his vote, as he believes a man should use his own common sense and judgment rather than to be blindly led by party leaders."

Living in Conway when his mother died in 1913.[9]

These 4 photos were among a box of photos and letters found in the attic of an old farm house north of Fowlerville in the 1970s. The house may have been owned previously by Glenn Dean (1896-1976), son of Chester B. Dean. See the correspondence below for further information.

Individuals who made original entries of land within the township of Hartland, Livingston Co., Michigan:
Abram Dean, December 1836, Section 9, 40 acres
Abram Dean, November 1836, Section 9, 40 acres

The Dean Settlement
Abram Dean and wife Catherine bought the NW ¼, Section 29 and the N ½ NW ¼ section 20 in Brighton Township in 1838. Their son, William Henry Harrison, b. 1836 in New York was with them. As was often the case, they traveled with friends for mutual support. Timothy Warner, Cyrenus Morgan and E.G. Durfee among them. The Deans built a home north of present day I-96 on the east side of Flint Rd. and commenced clearing land for farming. (Flint Road was the road one took to Flint.) The 1859 Brighton Township atlas notes a ‘hotel’ on the site. At that time the Brighton House (NE corner Grand River/Main Street) was on the stage coach route between Detroit and Lansing. Those heading north might have stayed with the Deans. The area was still a wilderness...
August 21, 22, 1907 hundreds attended the Brighton Homecoming. The two-day event included a program in the Opera House (east side Grand River between North and Main) in which several early settlers recalled incidents/events of the Brighton area. The son of Malcom Fitch, who built the first frame house in Brighton, c.1837, Henry S. Fitch, came from Chicago, having been gone 57 years and spoke of his boyhood days. “In the winter of 1844 and 1845, my father went to Pine Run (Flint) for lumber with a pair of horses and a democrat sleigh, taking me with him. “They started back to Brighton about noon. “ The snow was deep and the weather cold. There was not a house for many miles. Just before dark we were surrounded by a pack of wolves, one or two on each side of us jumping in the snow. Gradually the number increased and it became dark. There were about twenty of them and as they were getting very familiar with the horses and too near for comfort, the horses were put into a run, and the last mile from what was known as the Dean Settlement to our house the horses were on a dead run, the wolves keeping close company until within fifty rods of the house. “ He also recalled that children were not allowed out after dark because of wolves, bears and panthers.
Besides Abram, the years 1835/37 saw several families by the name of Dean, from New York, settling in Brighton, Genoa, Green Oak and Hamburg Townships; John b. 1794, PA; Daniel b. c. 1800 England; Joseph b. c 1800 NY; Daniel b. 1824, NY; Peter b. 1830 NY. Family relationships have not been positively identified but often family groups made the journey. Many Deans were farmers, some blacksmiths, millers, cobblers, weavers, etc.
In ‘lower town’ (the Main Street/Grand River intersection) John Dean built a two story frame tavern (later a blacksmith shop, 115-121 W. Grand River) where Miss Mary B. Pratt taught ‘select’ school on the second floor c.1845."

Hi Troy. First, I'm not researching the Deans and my Dickersons apparently come from lines that immigrated to Virginia in the 17th century.  Although I'm aware of Dickersons who immigrated to New England about the same time I'm not closely related to the Dickerson that I know of in Livingston or Lenawee Cos. Michigan who mostly migrated west from NE. Back in England I'm sure they were all of the same stripe. I stumbled on your site for some cyberspace reason and recognized the Dean name.

I purchased an old farm house north of Fowlerville in the '70s from a Dean family. I found in the attic some family documents and photos that I'd like to get to anyone who might be saving the genealogy of that family. It seem likely this family might have been related to Deans who earlier settled around Detroit. I will find this small packet of family relics and send you some names. The family from whom I bought the house was moving further west in Michigan, perhaps Hillsdale Co. to purchase a larger more profitable farm. I never actually met any of them and I've lost track of them.

Back to you in a bit.

Mel

Hi Troy here is what I have based on a quick over view of the letters. I'm still trying to get a name and present location on the Deans from whom I purchased the house in the '70s. Attached is a small file of contact prints of the negatives.

Rathbone or Rathburn and Boardway are the primary names in the communications I have. These are mostly letters dating from 1876 to the mid 1950s. The Dean names are as follows.

  • Laura Dean from Conway, Livingston Co., MI mentions a Mr. Boardway -1900 [Chester B. Dean married Laura E. Rathborn in 1888, they were living in Conway in 1913]
  • Glen Dean [Glenn W. Dean, (1896-1976) son of Chester B. Dean & Laura Rathborn, as of August 12, 1973 Glenn Dean had the family bible]
  • M. D. Dean
  • Mrs. Daniel Dean from Mrs. A. Cook of Dansville NY 29 Aug 1883
  • Dill somebody 1889
  • Mess. D. Dean and son- Morince (?) MI
  • Daniel Dean with connection to Binghamton NY 1884
  • Mr. and Mrs. Therlo Dean from 3rd letter box probably '50s [Therlo V. Dean (1923-1996) son of Glenn W. Dean]
  • other names
  • Edgar F. or L. Rathbone of Fowlerville MI
  • Mrs. Anna Boardway of Howell MI
  • Woodward of Lansing
  • Ada D. Cole of Saginaw and Hastings NB
  • Sarah McLaine 1885
  • From Nooksacfk (place-?) 30 jan 1876
  • re D. Dean Livingston Co.
  • Mrs. Grace Olds Okemos MI from Fowlerville 1894
  • Arthur E. Cole Esq. uncle of Ada(?) Michael of NB 1894

There are about 30-40 personal letters and as many B&W negatives, probably nitrate of apparently family scenes with no identifications

A Gabriel Dean bought land in Livingston Co. in 1837. This is probably the Gabriel Dean who married Lydia Brander and was a son of David Dean and Phebe Borland. His daughter was mentioned in the Fowlerville Review in 1875.
