commanded by Captain Ellis of the Reg. commanded by Maj. Ellis in the
N.Jersey line for Private. $20.00 Inscribed on the Roll of Pittsburgh
Agency at the rate of 20 Dollars per annum to commence on the 4th day
of March 1831.

The State of Ohio
Seneca County. On the sixth day of October A.D. 1832 personally
appeared in open court, before the court of Common Pleas, being a
court of record, and now sitting Matson Peterson Senr. a resident of
the township of Clinton,**** county, aged sixty seven years, four
months and a fraction, who being duly sworn according to law doth on
his *** oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the
benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered
the service of the United States under the following named officer,
and served on *****stated:

"I entered the service as a substitute for John Ellis the 21st day
of May A.D. 1781-- for a six months tour all which six months I
served---My officers were Col. Joseph Ellis, Major William Ellis,
Capt. Joseph Collins---I entered the service at Hattenfield,
Gloucester Co., New Jersey. We lay there about 3 months, and then
marched to Mount Holly, and from there to Burlington-- When I entered
the service my residence was 2 miles from *** Hattenfield (sic). I
have no documentary evidence of said service, and I know of no one's
testimony I can procure that can testify to said service.

He relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except
the payment, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of
the agency of any state.

We **** Robinson a clergyman residing in the township of Clinton
aforesaid and Nicholas Gutches residing in the same township do
hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Matson Peterson
Senr. who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration, that we
believe him to be of the age which he has sworn himself to be, that
he is seperted(sic) and believed in the neighborhood where he
resides, to have been a soldier in the Revolution and that we
consider in that opinion.

1. Q. By this Court of Law applicant Where and in what year were you
born?
A. I was born in Gloucester County State of N. Jersey on the 21 day
of May A.D. 1765.

2. Q. Have you any record of your age and if so, where is it?
A. I have, and it is in my Bibble. (sic)

3. Q. Where were you living when called into service, where have you
lived since the Revolutionary war, and where do you now live?
A. When called into service I lived near Hattonfield (sic)
Gloucester County N. Jersey; at the close of the Rev. War I moved
into Salem County N. Jersey then into Fairfield Co., Ohio, then into
Clinton township, Seneca County said state of Ohio where I now live.

4. Q. How were you called into service, were you drafted, did you
volunteer
or were you a substitute, and if a substitute, for whom?
A. I was a substitute for John Ellis.

5. Q. State the names of some of the regular officers who were with
the troops when you served, such Continental or Militia Regiments as
you may recollect, and the general circumstances of your service.
A. Capt. Joseph Matlack and Capt. Jacob Brown for the **** part of
the answer I must refer to my statement above.

6. Q. Did you ever receive a discharge from the service and if so by
whom,what grounds, and what has become of it?
A. I do not know whether I received a discharge or not if I did I
have lost it. I never supposed Revolutionary papers would be of any
importance to me.

7. Q. State the names of persons to whom you are acquainted in your
present neighborhood, and who can testify as to your character for
veracity, and their belief of your service as a soldier of the
Revolution.
A. Nicholas Gutchess, Esq., John Drake?, Reverend Mr. Robertson,
Uriah Egbert, John Bo*****, Zachariah Fosey, Jacob Hill.

And the said court do hereby declare their opinion, after the
investigation of the matter, and after putting the investigation
prescribed by the War Department, that the above named applicant was
a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states. And the court
further certifies that it affirms? to them that James Robinson, who
has signed the preceeding certificate is a clergyman, resident of the
nieghborhood of said applicant, and that Nicholas Gutches, who has
also signed the same is a resident in the same
